• Need a calm environment: Yes • Can live in the city: No • Get along with families with children: Unknown • Can get along with other dogs: Yes • Have lived with cats: Unknown • I have the following special characteristics regarding temperament or breed traits: Yes, I am shy and sensitive. In my new home, there should be experience and knowledge of how to build trust and a sense of security for a shy dog • Things to consider regarding my health: None • The following health treatments have been done: Dental care • Have lived in foster care at home: No • Have been in shelter kennel for more than 2 years: Yes • Can walk on a leash: Yes, but I prefer quiet walking areas with familiar and safe people. My sad story starts from the Pasvalys area, where I arrived at a yard in a small village called Smilgai. I am extremely shy and avoided people until the very end, so catching me was not an easy operation. The Mazas Draugasin volunteers worked tirelessly to catch me and bring me safely to the shelter. It took many hours and attempts until finally their efforts were rewarded and I was caught in a trap. As it turned out, I am extremely shy and fear strangers. It is unknown what I have experienced in my past that has caused my trust in humans to be so severely damaged. I am not angry at all, but I try to run away or hide when I am scared. Deep down inside, however, I am a happy and playful dog, I just need the opportunity to get rid of my fears. I love playing with other dogs and it would be good if there was a lively friend waiting for me at home. The staff here are already quite familiar to me, so they can come near me and I even may nibble their fingers. However, it is very difficult to get shy dogs to come out of their shells here, as there is a lot of noise and many dogs, and time is not enough. From the shelter, it is hoped that I will leave here as soon as possible and come out of my shell as the dog I really am.

About Tana

What life with Tana looks like

Tana is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Pet Rescue Finland in Helsinki.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Extremely shy and fearful, needs quiet environment and experienced handler

🇫🇮Adopting from Finland

Finnish shelters require a home visit and an adoption contract. Animals are vetted; the EU pet passport covers cross-border travel within the bloc.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tana, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tana?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Pet Rescue Finland handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tana on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tana if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Pet Rescue Finland will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tana already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tana isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Pet Rescue Finland early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tana and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FI). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
