Teddy

Shih Tzu · Male · Young · 1 year

Teddy is a fun-loving little Shih Tzu who enjoys playing, tasty treats and learning new things. He can be a little nervous when meeting new people and dogs, and may initially greet them with a bark or growl. Once he realises he is safe, he settles and can enjoy getting to know you. When Teddy trusts you, he loves having a fuss and showing his affectionate side. He is a bright boy who enjoys positive training and would love to continue building his confidence with his new family. Teddy would like to be the only dog in his new home and would prefer a quiet environment where he can have his own space. He cannot live with cats. He could potentially live with teenagers who understand that he can be nervous and will respect his boundaries. Teddy enjoys travelling in the car and is happy settling in his crate when left. He can find some handling and veterinary visits worrying, so his new family will need to understand that he may need extra support in these situations. Teddy is looking for patient, understanding adopters who are prepared to take things at his pace. He will need people who can give him time to build trust and confidence. Teddy also has some medical needs which we'd be happy to discuss further with you. Teddy will need ongoing training and support to gradually experience new people, places and situations. Tasty treats are a great way to help Teddy feel more comfortable and encourage him when learning. If you can offer Teddy a calm home, plenty of patience, positive experiences and the time he needs to settle in, you could help him become a much more confident and happy little companion.

About Teddy

What life with Teddy looks like

Teddy is a young adult shih tzu dog waiting at Dogs Trust Newbury in Newbury.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Teddy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Teddy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Newbury handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Teddy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Teddy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Newbury will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Teddy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Teddy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Newbury early rather than rehoming privately; they know Teddy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
