Thor

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

News April The dear male dog Thor is just at the beginning of his new life and has much to discover yet. He is currently not fully house-trained, but with some patience and loving guidance, he will surely learn that soon, as his foster home reports back. The handsome fellow is still cautious outdoors and can be easily unsettled by noises. New things sometimes scare him, but his great curiosity helps him become braver step by step. In familiar surroundings, he already shows himself to be very cuddly and clingy. He seeks closeness with humans and is friendly and open in his interactions. Thor's first walk in the vineyards went really well: attentive, energetic, and surprisingly athletic. The young male dog loves to go along and brings plenty of energy – long walks with him will surely bring a lot of joy. He also gets along well with other dogs and children and shows himself to be social and unobtrusive. All in all, Thor is a super cool, sensitive, and lovely guy who with a bit of security and time will definitely become a great companion. Background Thor was found on the street after the animal welfare workers from ProAnimal on La Gomera were informed by several neighbors that his owners had abandoned him. Apparently, the couple had split up and moved to another island – and Thor was simply left behind. At first, it wasn't easy to help him. He was frightened and distrustful, requiring the use of a live trap to safely take him into care without endangering him further. But everything changed quickly at the animal shelter. As soon as he realized that no one wanted to harm him and only wanted to help and show affection, he revealed his true nature. Thor is a wonderful, very loving, and gentle dog who just needed security to regain trust. Now he is looking for a family that will never leave him again, who will give him stability and love forever. Because Thor has already lost his home once – and this time it should be forever.

About Thor

What life with Thor looks like

Thor is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Garafia e.V. in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Thor, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Thor?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Garafia e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Thor on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Thor if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Garafia e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Thor already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Thor isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Garafia e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Thor and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
