Adopt Gerda

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 6 years

Our lovely "Bollerkopf" lady is seeking experienced and confident humans and a home where relaxed togetherness has the same importance as meaningful stimulation and walks. Gerda is a friendly, but still not entirely easy female dog, which is why she is not suitable for beginners. Besides being overly excitable in dog encounters, she understands how to behave distantly and rumply. However, she does not show any incompatibility with us and enjoys playing with a male dog with whom she likes to romp around. Toward familiar people, Gerda is always friendly, even though she still has a lot to learn about manners. In her case, it has a particularly high importance that there be a thoughtful and well-considered form of stimulation. For if one fosters her potential in the wrong direction, one likely ends up with a dog with very unwanted behavioral issues. Unfortunately, one can see from the excited female dog that in her past, perhaps "fetch" also had a high importance. It is enough for Gerda to see a toy and not approach it, so that she falls into a persistent and frustrated barking, from which she can only rarely regain her focus. Overall, she is very strongly outdoors-oriented and only very little to not at all oriented toward people. All of this should be addressed with a suitable dog training class or a professional trainer.

About Gerda

What life with Gerda looks like

Gerda is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Leipzig in Leipzig.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires professional training for behavioral issues including leash reactivity, resource guarding with toys, and lack of human focus outdoors.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gerda, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gerda?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Leipzig handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gerda on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gerda if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Leipzig will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gerda already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gerda isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Leipzig early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gerda and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
