Adopt Sammy

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

Sammy is a very active male dog who requires a calm and safe environment. If one is themselves hectic or loud, Sammy may react with aggression. A calm mental stimulation like nose work would be very beneficial for him, to prevent him from becoming overexcited. It is also important to ensure adequate daytime rest periods. Therefore, Sammy is not a dog for beginners and is also not suitable for turbulent families with children. He requires a quiet home and, ideally, a quiet, more rural surroundings. It would be desirable if he had an existing, securely fenced yard where the active male dog can also run and play freely without a leash. Sammy is compatible with female dogs and loves energetic play. A confident and open female dog in the home could perhaps provide him with a little more security to finally settle in his new home. Sammy is officially classified as potentially dangerous in an individual case. This means that the adopter must be officially knowledgeable (=has passed a knowledge test before the relevant authority) or must take the knowledge test at their local authority. Additionally, Sammy has been subject to an unconditional leash and muzzle obligation in Saxony. Sammy is well accustomed to wearing the muzzle. If you are interested in one of our dogs, please contact us preferably by email. Describe in the email how the dog will live with you and send us a phone number. Then, a staff member will contact you. Dog descriptions are based on observations at the animal shelter or information from third parties and do not represent guaranteed characteristics. About Sammy

What life with Sammy looks like

Sammy is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Leipzig in Leipzig.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Officially classified as dangerous - requires owner certification, mandatory leash and muzzle use in Saxony

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sammy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sammy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Leipzig handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sammy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sammy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Leipzig will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sammy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sammy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Leipzig early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sammy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
