Syra

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 13 years

Syra has been in our animal shelter since 2018 and is now showing signs of age. She receives a depot painkiller to ensure she doesn't have any problems walking. Therefore, we can only place the female dog on the ground floor or in a home with an elevator. Syra was always a rather excitable female dog that reacted strongly to movement stimuli. However, she is now age-apparently much calmer. She no longer requires much in the way of training, but rather a relaxed home as a retirement spot where she can have a family again after all these years in the animal shelter and be spoiled. Large walks are unfortunately no longer an option, as Syra often limps afterward. The ideal place would be somewhere where she can simply lie in the garden or on a soft dog bed during the day and decide for herself how much she wants to move. The female dog shows friendliness after a short get-to-know-you phase, but reacts cautiously to strangers. Syra is looking for a reliable home as a single dog without children. Due to her mixed breed, a behavioral assessment is still pending for Syra, and she must be on a leash with a muzzle until then. A reason to consider a home with an enclosed yard is that she can move freely and without a muzzle there. She needs a home that still wants to offer a beautiful time to an older animal and can still keep her occupied in a slightly age-appropriate manner, such as with nose work, like searching for treats, etc. Syra also loves water, and in the summer, splashing in the dog pool or swimming in the lake is her absolute highlight. The older photos show Syra fit and muscular with two standing ears, while she is now a lovable older lady with a bent ear. She had previously had problems with a so-called Blutohr, which was treated and is now fully healed. The ear no longer requires medical care, and the bend simply underscores Syra's lovable nature. About Syra

What life with Syra looks like

Syra is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Leipzig in Leipzig.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Arthritis requiring pain medication, needs ground floor or elevator access, requires muzzle in public until temperament test completed

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Syra, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Syra?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Leipzig handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Syra on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Syra if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Leipzig will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Syra already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Syra isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Leipzig early rather than rehoming privately; they know Syra and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
