TIKKI

Female · Young · 1 year

Tikki arrived at the shelter through a neighbor of her owner, who no longer wanted her. Unfortunately, she spent her days locked in a small cage. When she arrived at the shelter, Tikki was very scared. She has since gained some confidence, although she remains wary of people she doesn't know. However, she wants to trust and, when she meets someone and feels safe, she relaxes and turns over on her back looking for affection. Tikki was adopted but was returned because of territorial behaviors towards the family dog, mainly due to the attention of the owners. She is a very spoiled dog that likes to be in her owner's lap and have a comfortable spot to herself, but she ends up wanting all the attention of the family for herself. Therefore, it would be ideal for her to be an only child, or to be adopted by a more experienced family with a larger dog and willing to make a very careful adjustment. She is an agile dog that jumps a lot, so you need to be careful with open balconies or places where she can jump. She is startled by loud noises like motorcycles, trucks, and large cars, so she needs to always be on a leash and with someone patient who helps her gain confidence in these situations. Tikki is sweet, affectionate, and companionable when she feels safe. She will be delivered vaccinated, dewormed, spayed, and with a microchip.

PT·Show original

About TIKKI

What life with TIKKI looks like

TIKKI is a small young adult dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting TIKKI, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about TIKKI?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw TIKKI on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt TIKKI if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is TIKKI already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if TIKKI isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know TIKKI and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
