Tirso

Mixed Breed · Male

Tirso is a three-year-old male dog, red and white (as of 06/2022), with highly expressive ears, green eyes, and a nose that appears in radiant pink during the winter. You already suspect it, Tirso is a Podenco mix - and thus has (completely unjustly) already had it much harder than other dogs in finding a real home. The Podenco is actually the perfect family dog, yet the fact that members of this breed are almost exclusively used for hunting in Spain and often discarded by their owners like broken toys once they are no longer suitable for work or the season is over, causes many people to shy away from this breed. It is true that the Podenco is a running-loving hunting dog and it can take a long time before a representative of this breed can be let off the leash without concern, but this is not a problem that only affects Podencos (especially since it also depends on the character of each individual dog) and there are plenty of other ways to give the Podenco enough exercise. Dog sports, playing in the garden, cycling, jogging, and many other things are excellent alternatives. On the positive side of these clever Spaniards, there are many points that are far more interesting. The Podenco is usually extremely quiet and balanced at home. He neither barks nor excessively protects, moves almost silently, and loves cuddles above all. As a confident working dog, most learn very quickly how to be alone without embellishing the furnishings out of boredom or adding extra holes to the family shoes. Tirso came into the care of ArcoNatura several weeks ago. He had been wandering the streets of Linares for a long time and was very relieved when he finally moved into the security of the completely overcrowded shelter. The friendly male dog had an infected bite wound on his neck and was extremely grateful that his pain was relieved and he no longer had to worry about food and a dry or shady place to sleep. Tirso quickly made friends at the animal shelter - two- and four-legged ones, and he shows a really pleasant, curious, and affectionate side, but so far no one has come to take him home. Yet Tirso would love to convince his own two-legged beings how wonderful living together with a red-nosed bat-ear can be. A warm dog bed, his own ball, a hand that gently strokes his belly after a long walk - all of these things our charmer does not know yet. To discover such great things, Tirso needs your help; would you like to give him or one of our other fiery red playmobiles a home?

DE·Show original

About Tirso

What life with Tirso looks like

Tirso is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tirso, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tirso?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tirso on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tirso if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tirso already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tirso isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tirso and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
