Tom

Jack Russell Terrier · Male · Senior · 10 years

Tennis ball loving Tom is a friendly chap who really enjoys meeting people and would love a home with lots of people that can meet his non-stop fussing demands! He’s generally very relaxed when someone is with him, but he does fret if left alone and can be destructive when he’s anxious, so a multi-person home would be ideal. He used to be quite keen on looking for other dogs to react to on his walks but he’s chilled out a lot and will calmly walk past them, unless they bark at him in which case he’ll let them know what he thinks! Tom would walk all day if he could but sadly his dodgy leg won’t allow that. He loves to play, especially chasing after balls and likes you to play with him too. Car travel is no big deal for him as he’ll happily be lifted in ready for adventures. A home where he can be someone’s best buddy would be perfect for him. Tom will need to be the only pet at home as he doesn't enjoy sharing with others, and can find find nearby dogs worrying but he can live with children aged 14 and over. He is house trained but panics if left alone so needs someone with him constantly. A secure garden is a must as Tom has escaped from one previously. Tom has a ruptured cruciate but is not a good candidate for surgery so will be managed with pain relief.

About Tom

What life with Tom looks like

Tom is a large senior jack russell terrier dog waiting at Dogs Trust Merseyside in Liverpool.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Ruptured cruciate ligament managed with pain relief, separation anxiety requiring constant companionship, history of escaping

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tom, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tom?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Merseyside handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tom on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tom if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Merseyside will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tom already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tom isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Merseyside early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tom and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
