Tom

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 2 years

Tom is a handsome young boy, estimated to be between 1 and 2 years old, who is looking for a loving home where he can truly settle and shine. At first glance, Tom may appear to be a cool, independent cat. This is largely a marketing strategy. In reality, he’s quite a softie who enjoys settling on a lap for gentle fusses and producing a purr so subtle that you feel the vibrations rather than hear them. Being a young cat, Tom also has a playful side and dedicates much of his time to his chosen career: hunting fluffy pompoms. He will chase them, pounce on them and launch himself through the air to catch them with impressive athleticism. On several occasions he has even returned them to his fosterer, leading us to believe he may be attempting to play fetch. We’re not entirely sure whether this is a learned skill or simply a happy coincidence – the evidence is inconclusive, but Tom would like credit for the effort. Tom is a bright and intelligent cat who enjoys his food and quickly mastered using a feeder ball. He has developed an effective system for reminding his fosterer about mealtimes. This involves sitting beside his food bowl and staring meaningfully until she realises that he has, in fact, not eaten for at least seven minutes and is therefore clearly wasting away. Although Tom has lived with other cats before, he feels that sharing attention is an unnecessary inconvenience. He would much prefer to be the sole recipient of admiration, affection and compliments about how handsome he is. We feel Tom would be happiest in a quieter home where he can settle at his own pace. Older, cat-savvy children who understand when he wants attention—and when he’s busy with important pompom business—would be fine. Once fully settled into his new home, he would appreciate access to safe outdoor space, allowing him to explore and enjoy the best of both worlds. About Tom

What life with Tom looks like

Tom is a young adult mixed breed cat waiting at RSPCA Altrincham & Cheshire in United Kingdom.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tom, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tom?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. RSPCA Altrincham & Cheshire handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tom on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tom if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — RSPCA Altrincham & Cheshire will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tom already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tom isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with RSPCA Altrincham & Cheshire early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tom and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
