Tomas

Mixed Breed · Male

Agility, Dog Dance, funny tricks, TV evenings on the couch, playing soccer in the garden - there is much that our high-energy, funny new arrival Tomas can be enthusiastic about ... but not for sheep. This became a real problem for him, because Tomas was born to a shepherd who was not very pleased with a working dog that had no desire to work. Unfortunately, the strict dog owner could not laugh at the escapades of the highly intelligent young dog, but only wanted to get rid of the dysfunctional "tool" as quickly as possible. Fortunately, the animal welfare workers of Arca Wind learned about the fate of the one-year-old whirlwind (as of 09/2021), and so Tomas was neither shot nor abandoned, nor did he end up in the perrera, but is waiting in our animal shelter's friends for the start signal for his journey to great happiness. So little interest the curious and athletic male dog has in herding, so much fun does he have with all activities involving people. Tomas likes to stick to the feet of volunteers, brings balls and invites to play, searches in pockets for cookies and enjoys every petting. Of course, Tomas also finds other dogs great and likes to measure his adolescent strength with peers in wrestling, playing, racing and jumping. Although Tomas is very energetic and learns and plays with dedication, the young dog is already very balanced for his age and has a good grip on himself. Calm and attentive, he follows the bipeds who engage with him, and enjoys showing what he has already learned. Tomas wishes for a family that is familiar with his breed, or at least willing to thoroughly deal with it. Sport (in any form) and tasks for the super smart head are the minimum that Tomas needs along with plenty of cuddles and love - but we are sure that our fantastic adopters already know this. Tomas, a clever super athlete, is waiting for the start signal to sprint into a new life - will you be at the finish line to welcome him?

DE·Show original

About Tomas

What life with Tomas looks like

Tomas is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tomas, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tomas?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tomas on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tomas if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tomas already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tomas isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tomas and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
