Toni

Male · Young · 3 years

Toni's Character & Strengths (outdoors): Outside, Toni shows his best side: Recall & Obedience: When passersby, other dogs, cyclists or distractions appear, he reliably comes back on recall. He waits patiently in a sit until the situation is over. Water Lover: Toni loves water above all else. When he can run on field paths and splash in water, he is a completely happy and balanced dog. Behavior in the Village: In the village/residential area, he occasionally shows some uncertainty or anxiety, but orients himself well to his caregivers. The Problem/Reason for Surrender: Toni shows pronounced territorial and jealous behavior in his own home. We have to admit honestly that we have reached our limits here in leadership and upbringing. Behavior in the House: Toni claims resources and spaces for himself. If he doesn't like something, he shows this very clearly (threatening, growling, baring his teeth). Biting Incident: A few weeks ago, a biting incident occurred in the house. Our dog trainer classified this as a "warning" because the injury was minor. Nevertheless, the owner has now developed a great fear of him and no longer stays alone with him in the house. We can no longer move freely in our own four walls as soon as Toni takes the lead. Trainer's Assessment: Our trainer has no problems with Toni himself. The behavior is clearly due to the current domestic environment, the dynamics, and the lack of leadership from us as owners. Sought Home: We are looking for an experienced, consistent, and confident home for Toni (preferably for Molosser/Bulldog owners) without children, where clear structures and boundaries are set from day one. An environment where he does not take over decision-making authority, but can orient himself to his humans.

About Toni

What life with Toni looks like

Toni is a large young adult dog waiting at Tierheim Neuwied in Neuwied.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Toni, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Toni?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Neuwied handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Toni on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Toni if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Neuwied will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Toni already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Toni isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Neuwied early rather than rehoming privately; they know Toni and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
