Adopt Torben

Australian Shepherd · Male · Senior · 10 years

I am Torben – handsome, but a serious dog who needs an experienced home. I came to the animal shelter because I unfortunately injured someone in my previous family due to resource defense. In the animal shelter, I live with male dogs and female dogs and show myself very well in the group – other dogs read me when I claim something for myself. But humans have to be able to do that too. Would you like to know more about me? I am very intelligent and incredibly trainable. Many commands and tricks I already know. On the leash, I do great, know the transport box, and travel well in the car. My project: I defend things that are valuable to me – mainly food, but also toys and “my” places (rest spot, box, run area). If I feel pressured, I may even use my teeth. Please no hunting imitations or very exciting games with me; quiet cognitive tasks fit much better. As a reward, something that is immediately eaten – nothing to chew on. My beautiful fur needs intensive care. I let brushing and fur care be done by trained people I trust; for safety, I wear a muzzle. I wish for… sovereign, very dog-experienced people – ideally with experience in resource aggression – who give me clear, fair rules from the start. For the adjustment, I need my own dog room, separated, e.g., with a baby gate. A quiet living environment (not in the city center) is important. Children are out of the question for me – even in the long term. Please plan several get-to-know-you visits at the animal shelter so we can build trust. I am sure: There is the right home out there for me too.

About Torben

What life with Torben looks like

Torben is a medium-sized senior australian shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg in Berlin.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Resource guarding behavior, requires muzzle during grooming, needs separate dog room during adjustment period, multiple meet-and-greet visits required

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Torben, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Torben?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Torben on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Torben if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Torben already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Torben isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Torben and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
