Vitus

Male · 3 years

Specials: Outdoor run. Update: I have looked at this with people more carefully. A small pat isn't actually that bad. And the occasional treat from a human hand—well, I've got that memorized. Now, treats can also bribe me well. Okay, my picture isn't the prettiest. I was fed outdoors for a long time and never had a home. Cats like me are probably called strays or a bit feral. I don't want anything to do with the other cats in this room. In my new home, I would like to be left alone and go exploring after getting used to it. A rural environment with people who know how to take me in would be nice. You really need a lot of patience with me because I don't like being handled; I go to the extreme. Besides hissing, I bite and scratch, there's no cuddling with me. This cat needs outdoor access.

Besonderheiten: Freigang.

About Vitus

What life with Vitus looks like

Vitus is a medium-sized adult cat waiting at Tierheim Essen in Essen.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Vitus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Vitus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Essen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Vitus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Vitus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Essen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Vitus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Vitus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Essen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Vitus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
