Adopt Whoopy

Male · Adult · 6 years

Whoopy is a special and sensitive boy, a Mudi mix breed born on April 10, 2020. He is not a beginner's dog and is looking for an experienced owner who understands him and can gain his trust. Whoopy has had a difficult path. As a transfer dog, he was moved from place to place, because people were often scared of him. Eventually, he was brought in with us through a seizure. He needed two months to trust us, but now he is ready to let more people in and find his golden bed. Whoopy is an extremely fearful and uncertain dog. From fear, he can bite, so it is important that his new owner approaches him with calm and patience. But whoever gains his trust - and you do that with hotdog, chicken and hamburger - discovers a dog who completely blossoms. On the field and during walks he can enjoy himself greatly and then he is a real teddy bear. He cannot be placed with other animals. We are looking for him a stable, quiet home, without busy stimuli, where he can adapt and grow at his own pace. Who has the patience and love to build a bond with this handsome boy and finally give him his forever home? For Whoopy we are looking for people who are willing to make an engagement and come multiple times to our animal shelter to slowly build a bond with him. Trust takes time and we want him to feel safe and calm while adapting to his future owner. Do you think you are the right match for Whoopy?

About Whoopy

What life with Whoopy looks like

Whoopy is a large adult dog waiting at Dierenbescherming Mechelen in Mechelen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Whoopy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Whoopy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenbescherming Mechelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Whoopy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Whoopy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenbescherming Mechelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Whoopy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Whoopy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenbescherming Mechelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Whoopy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
