Adopt Winnie

Female · Young · 3 years

Background: This sturdy lady is Winnie, a female Alabai, born in December 2023. She came to us from a distance because the care for her was underestimated. Now we are looking for a home where she gets the necessary space and attention. Character: Winnie is a big dog with a tiny heart. A gentle character that likes to lean against you to be together. She is a bit shy with strangers, but becomes more relaxed when you give her calm space to approach on her own. She enjoys a large, high fenced yard and actually walks quite well on a leash. Yet, she can sometimes come from the corner strongly (this is not happening right now yet) and you should still be able to handle her. She ignores passersby, other dogs, people,... She would like to get close to people, just to cuddle. She used to live with her sister all the time outside. She will have to get used to living indoors, but a nice place where she can have a nice, social outdoor life is definitely not bad! She can also ride a long way in the car. Placement: Winnie is looking for a home where there is a preference for large breeds and yet know what they are bringing into their house. She is soft-hearted but still strong-legged. She is used to children but can be a bit possessive about treats. Children from 14 years old who are used to dogs can meet her. She is currently doing certainly not badly as a dog alone, which seems to be her preference. Winnie is not suitable for living in a small space. A large garden, with good fencing and nice facilities are really necessary to offer her a good quality of life.

About Winnie

What life with Winnie looks like

Winnie is a small young adult dog waiting at Dierenasiel Sint-Truiden in Sint-Truiden.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Winnie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Winnie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Sint-Truiden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Winnie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Winnie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Sint-Truiden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Winnie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Winnie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Sint-Truiden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Winnie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
