Winston

Mixed Breed Β· Male Β· Young Β· 3 years

You may remeber Winston, he is one of our long stay residents who is now back up for adoption.🩡 Winston has had a really tough time these past couple of years and we'd like to tell you a bit more about him in the hope of finding his forever home. πŸ’• Winston originally came into our care back in 2021 when he was just a baby at 8 months old. πŸ˜” Luckily, he wasn't with us for too long before he found a home and we were delighted that he wasn't stuck in kennels at such a young age. Fast forward 3 years to 2024 and due to a change in the owners circumstances, Winston was sadly returned. πŸ˜” As soon as he arrived back with us, it was clear that he wasn't going to cope well in kennels and we were all apprehensive about his future here. Over a period of weeks and months, Winston surprisingly seemed to accept his new fate of kennel life and began to settle down. Winston then spent over a year and a half with us and had almost zero interest in anyone adopting him.πŸ˜” In December 2025 we finally thought that all our prayers had been answered when a family came forward for Winston and everything was going so well.☺️ Winston was adopted out and we had great hopes for his future. Not too long after he'd gone, we sadly received a call to say that things weren't working out and that he needed to come back. πŸ˜₯ Of course we were absolutely gutted for Winston after being in kennels for so long, but we equally didn't want him being in a home that wasn't the right one for him. When he returned to us he was like a different dog. We think the trauma of coming back into kennels for a third time had simply pushed him to his limit and he just wasn't coping.πŸ’” It was at this point that we decided to remove him from the website in order to give him and us some time to work out what we were going to do to try and help him through this stressful time. We have been switiching up his routine and trying to ensure that we do everything we can to help him mentally cope and it seems to be working. ☺️ Winston is a friendly, playful boy who loves a run around our off lead paddock. πŸ˜€ He is a super intelligent and is keen to learn new tricks and is eager to please (especially if there are treats on offer!) πŸ˜‹ Once he knows you, he is incredibly affectionate and loves nothing more than having cuddles and curling up with you on the sofa. πŸ₯° Winston is a large boy and of course can be strong so he needs someone who can physically manage him should he decide to pull in different direction. During his time here, we have introduced walking aids that make him much easier to manage and a pleasure to walk. 😊 Winston can walk well alongside other calm dogs here at the shelter, however he doesn't appreciate dogs in his personal space and can react if another dog is barking at him, so we are looking to home him as the only dog and pet in the home. Winston seems to have had some previous trauma with children as it really is apparent how uncomfortable he is around them. Because of this, we are looking to place Winston in an adult only home with no visiting children and with owners who won't typically encounter children in their day to day lives. Since returning to us, we decided to do some muzzle training with Winston and he has done so well. ☺️ Our decision to start using a muzzle with Winston was simply to put precautions in place, should Winston find himself in a situation that he is unable to cope with and to give his handler more confidence when out walking him. We can discuss this is more detail with anyone who is interested in adopting him. ☺️ We really want his next home to be his forever one.❀️ If you have room for a large bundle of love in the shape of our Winston, please give us a call on for more information. πŸ’™

About Winston

What life with Winston looks like

Winston is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hull Animal Welfare Trust in South Cave.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible β€” a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" β€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures β€” to let them settle.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Winston, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Winston?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hull Animal Welfare Trust handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Winston on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Winston if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Hull Animal Welfare Trust will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Winston already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Winston isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hull Animal Welfare Trust early rather than rehoming privately; they know Winston and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
