Adopt Zappel

Male · Young · 3 years

Zappel came to us as a found animal, and unfortunately, we know nothing about his past. What we do know: he has already been through a lot. With small scars on his face and ears, he initially appeared like a true street cat who had lived outdoors for a while. At first, Zappel was, of course, shy and sometimes a bit grumpy – who can blame him after the time spent outdoors and then in cage-holding? Since moving into our adoption room, however, he has changed positively: Zappel has blossomed and is becoming increasingly people-oriented. In extremely stressful situations, he can still react rudely, but with patience and understanding, he can be read well, although a good touch and experience are still definitely necessary. For Zappel, we wish for a home with secure outdoor access, as we assume he is used to being outdoors. A quiet household without small children would be ideal for him, so he can continue to build trust at his own pace. Zappel is not a perfect lap cat – but a character with a heart that deserves a second chance. Who will give him that?

About Zappel

What life with Zappel looks like

Zappel is a medium-sized young adult cat waiting at Tierheim Düsseldorf in Düsseldorf.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

Note from the shelter: Requires patient owner due to past trauma, needs secured outdoor access, can be reactive in stressful situations

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Zappel, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Zappel?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Düsseldorf handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Zappel on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Zappel if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Düsseldorf will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Zappel already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Zappel isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Düsseldorf early rather than rehoming privately; they know Zappel and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
