Zara

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 8 years

Zara - approximately 45cm Zara has experienced more in her life than many other dogs ever have. She spent a long time struggling to survive on the streets before she was finally taken in by our partner animal shelter. During the initial examination, she was unfortunately diagnosed with leishmaniasis. Treatment was started immediately and Zara is doing very well. But that's not all: last winter, Zara slipped on the wet tiles during the cleaning of the kennels and tore both cruciate ligaments. Thanks to the support of many generous people, her urgently needed surgery was financed, so that she could be operated on by an experienced surgeon in Athens in February. Fortunately, both the operation and the subsequent recovery went very well. Zara's calm and patient nature certainly played a big role in this. Meanwhile, Zara is allowed to run together with the other dogs in a mixed group again. However, it is noticeable that she has become more cautious than before. She also lacks some muscle mass from her long time in the kennel, which she is now slowly building up again. Despite all these hardships, Zara has never lost her friendly and gentle nature. She is an incredibly sweet dog who keeps to the background in the bustle and first observes everything carefully. Even in situations that are uncomfortable for many dogs, such as changing bandages, visits to the vet or nail trimming, she always shows herself to be cooperative and patient. She would never think of fighting back or challenging her humans. It makes us all the more sad that Zara has hardly been noticed so far. Often it is precisely the quiet, modest dogs that are overlooked, although they have so much to give. We wish Zara a quiet home in a rural area, preferably with a garden and as few stairs as possible. She doesn't need long hikes or athletic peak performances. What's more important to her are reliable people who accept her as she is and give her the time to settle in her new life. Since Zara is rather reserved, her future humans should be patient and not expect too much from her at first. Children in the new home should be at least six years old and already know how to treat dogs with respect. A confident first dog is welcome in the household and could even give Zara orientation. Very young, stormy or pushy dogs would probably overwhelm her, however. Dogs from the animal shelter can still change after moving into their new home. New surroundings, new impressions, new people. Many of them only show a part of their personality due to the limited possibilities in the shelter. Please be patient with them. Who finally gives this special dog the love and security she so badly deserves after all these difficult years? Zara travels spayed, vaccinated, with an identification chip and an EU pet passport. She will be tested for Mediterranean diseases again before departure. If you live in a rented apartment, you must provide us with a written confirmation from the landlord that keeping a dog is really allowed. This important point should be clarified before the placement request. Zara is still in the animal shelter in Greece and can travel to Germany or Switzerland after a positive preliminary check. All our dogs travel with adapted safety harnesses! Are you interested in this dog? Then click on this link to go directly to the adoption form. Current pictures

About Zara

What life with Zara looks like

Zara is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Paradies für Tiere e.V. in Reutlingen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Zara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Zara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Paradies für Tiere e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Zara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Zara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Paradies für Tiere e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Zara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Zara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Paradies für Tiere e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Zara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
