CRITICAL RULES: 1. Preserve every `Zara`, `Zara`, `our shelter`, `this breed`, `our area` placeholder VERBATIM. Do not rename, translate, or reformat them. 2. Preserve any other proper-name-looking capitalized German words (sibling animals, shelter staff names) verbatim. 3. Output ONLY the English translation. No preamble, no explanation, no markdown, no notes. German source: Zara is three and a half years old (as of 03/2023), by nature a beautiful Galga and has been in a foster family in Seville since November last year. Zara was abandoned on a field at the beginning of the hunting season 22/23, probably she was not alone. The frightened female dog sought refuge in a burrow, where she lived for several weeks - and because she had worked very hard to develop her home, it was not easy for the animal protectors to catch the thin and shy creature. Only with a cage trap and infinite patience was it finally possible to take Zara into care. At the foster home, Zara has developed into a very kind and affectionate girl. She loves lying on the couch or in the cozy dog bed and dreaming. Zara likes being indoors or in protected areas of the garden, she seeks security and does not need much action to be happy. When she feels safe, Zara also likes to play with other dogs or engage in gardening and ornithological observations, whereas classic dog toys interest our model for photographs in no way at all. In dealings with people, Zara is still very reserved, especially strange men find this elegant greyhound terrifying. However, Zara has already made great progress in the weeks with her foster family, allows herself to form friendships that she can close at her own pace and accepts everyday touches like putting on the leash or collar without any problems. Also, Zara has already discovered the joy of cuddling, you just have to have the patience to wait until Zara seeks affection on her own. If you have proven yourself worthy of her "dignity" persistently, you will then be overwhelmed with the typical love of a greyhound. Zara masters classical Spanish Zen-Yoga and can enjoy long abdominal massages with her legs stretched high into the air, like a gazelle. Children find Zara absolutely okay, but even when dealing with two-legged offspring she needs some time to adjust. Therefore, the younger inhabitants of her new home should already understand that Zara wants to determine the pace of contact herself. Zara is looking for a patient family, which gives her the time to understand and forget the unknown world, and how much suffering she has already endured from human hands. She wishes for long walks through the neighborhood, new friends to play with and cozy evenings in front of the TV with her own two-leggers, who have promised never to leave her again and to love her unconditionally.

About Zara

What life with Zara looks like

Zara is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Zara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Zara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Zara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Zara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Zara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Zara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Zara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
