Željko

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

Željko is one of those dogs whose story will stay with a person for a long time. He arrived at our shelter in the worst condition we have ever seen. He was found at a landfill, almost without strength and at the very end of his life. We do not know if someone left him there or if he came there on his own to meet his end. What we do know is that his end did not happen then. Željko showed what it means to be a fighter. From a nearly immobile and exhausted dog, he has become a beautiful creature that enjoys life again. With a lot of care, treatment and patience, he recovered as much as possible. His future owner will receive all veterinary records and details about his health status. Today, Željko walks nicely on a leash, enjoys walks and increasingly shows his true character. He is friendly and gentle with people, and he also enjoys the company of other dogs. We estimate that he is around five years old. Željko has a life behind him that he should not have survived. However, he survived. Not only did he survive, but he decided to live again. Now he is looking for a home where he can forget everything that was before and finally experience life as every dog should have had from the very beginning. Željko has already won his battle. Now he needs a person to help him win the most important one, the opportunity for a real home. Because for Željko, the end is not near. His new life is just beginning. ❤️

HR·Show original

About Željko

What life with Željko looks like

Željko is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Azil Dubrovnik in Croatia.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇭🇷Adopting from Croatia

Croatian shelters include sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID in the adoption process. Several work with Italian and German rescue networks for placements.

Frequently asked

Adopting Željko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Željko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Azil Dubrovnik handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Željko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Željko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Azil Dubrovnik will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Željko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Željko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Azil Dubrovnik early rather than rehoming privately; they know Željko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (HR). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
