Zeus

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

- Can be clingy with familiar people, be cautious with strangers - moves around the street calmly - can stay alone and travel in the car - gets along with large female dogs - not suitable for small children - muzzle and leash requirements Coming from Mallorca, Zeus's previous owners had such big problems with Zeus that he had to come to us as a court-ordered custody. Zeus takes a long time to build trust, and the mistrust and insecurity make working on his various aggression issues more difficult. But with calmness, structure, and boundaries, as well as repeatedly recurring kind rituals, Zeus can also adapt to new people and situations. Zeus is cared for by two animal caretakers and has two additional volunteer walk leaders who take him on outings. Here, Zeus is friendly, likes cuddles, enjoys grooming, and is also not averse to play. He also gets along well with female dogs that are his size. Ideally, in Zeus' future home, there should be an individual to whom he can bond. This person should also be able to set clear boundaries, as Zeus tends to defend his "chosen" person against others. Since Zeus meets every stranger with mistrust at the beginning, potential adopters should be prepared for several visits and a longer getting-to-know-you period. Zeus wears a muzzle, which must also be worn in the first phase and in all new and uncertain situations. He has a pronounced food and resource aggression. But even here, Zeus has made progress in training, and this must be taken seriously in everyday life. We practice and train a lot with Zeus so that everyday things like feeding, walking on a leash, but especially also grooming and touching (stroking/medical procedures) become normal for Zeus. There have already been progress in this area. In the home of his foster animal caretaker, Zeus is calm and friendly. He is environmentally safe and has little interest in other fellow animals on a leash and no hunting ambitions. In the animal shelter, Zeus shows a clear territorial tendency. The enclosure is defended against strangers. We are looking forward to people who can take on a sponsorship for our Zeus. A pet sponsorship for Zeus is possible from a monthly contribution of 20 euros. This underscores your special connection to "your" pet animal. Please note that a guardian can have several

About Zeus

What life with Zeus looks like

Zeus is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Resource guarding, stranger aggression, requires muzzle and leash mandate, needs extensive socialization

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Zeus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Zeus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Zeus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Zeus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Zeus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Zeus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Zeus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
