Returning to the issue of dog breeds and the often disabling complications that affect selected specimens. One of the most serious problems caused to dogs has been - and unfortunately still is - the docking of tails and ears solely to meet breed standards. In Italy, this practice has been illegal since 2010, as established by Article 10 of the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals, ratified by the Italian State through Law No. 201 of November 4, 2010. Article 10 prohibits surgical operations on pet animals for aesthetic reasons, in particular the amputation of the tail (caudectomy) and ears (conchectomy), the cutting of vocal cords, and the removal of nails and teeth. In Italy, tail docking on hunting dogs was only banned from March 2011. This type of operation is allowed only in cases where it is necessary to safeguard the dog's health, an aspect that unfortunately leaves the door open to a whole range of aesthetic interventions that are illegally passed off as curative. To this day, we still see, especially within unlikely dog shows and competitions (where the display of "mutilated" dogs has been prohibited since 2009), dogs of various breeds with deformed ears from amputation or without a tail. A real act of cruelty (punishable by Article 544-ter of the Penal Code with imprisonment from 3 to 18 months or a fine from 5,000 to 30,000 euros), which also causes the loss or reduction of the ability to "speak" through body language. Ears and tail are essential for the visual-postural communication of dogs: depending on their position forward, backward, flattened against the head, spread apart, tilted, or moving, the ears express attention, aggression, fear, submission, calmness, emphasize signs of pacification, show the desire to make contact; the tail moves in different ways - stiff and raised, horizontal, low, between the legs, with jerky movements, relaxed, wagging - to express the same intentions. To understand how vital it is, just think of a dog that cannot wag its tail, perhaps the action that most immediately characterizes its relationship with humans. There are countless gestures and corresponding messages that a dog reveals through its ears and tail, and mutilating them means reducing its ability to socialize with other dogs and people. A silence that certainly does not deserve Dobermans, Alans, Boxers, Italian Mastiffs, American Staffords, Argentine Dogos, dogs that naturally reveal their authentic beauty, especially when they are free to shake their large floppy ears and long, expressive tails full of "voices" and emotions.

Torniamo a parlare della questione delle razze canine e delle complicazioni spesso invalidanti che colpiscono gli esemplari selezionati. Uno dei problemi forse più gravi causati ai cani è stato – ed è purtroppo tuttora – il taglio di coda e orecchie con il solo fine di rispettare gli standard di razza. In Italia questa pratica è proibita per legge dal 2010, lo stabilisce l’articolo 10 della Convenzione europea per la protezione degli animali da compagnia, ratificata dallo Stato italiano attraverso la legge del 4 novembre 2010/n. 201. L’articolo 10 proibisce le operazioni chirurgiche su animali da compagnia per motivi estetici, in particolare l’amputazione di coda (caudectomia) e orecchie (conchectomia), la recisione delle corde vocali e l’asportazione di unghie e denti. In Italia, il taglio della coda nei cani da caccia è stato vietato solo da marzo del 2011 Questo tipo di operazioni è permesso soltanto in casi in cui sia necessario salvaguardare la salute del cane, aspetto questo che purtroppo lascia il fianco scoperto a tutta una serie di interventi estetici che sono fatti passare per curativi in maniera illegale. Perché a tutt’oggi si vedono ancora, soprattutto all’interno di improbabili mostre e concorsi cinofili (dove l'esibizione di cani “menomati” è vietata dal 2009), cani di varie razze con le orecchie deformate dall’amputazione o senza la coda. Un vero e proprio maltrattamento (penalmente punito dall’articolo 544-ter c.p. con la reclusione da 3 a 18 mesi o la multa da 5.000 a 30.000 euro), che tra le conseguenze ha anche la perdita o la riduzione della capacità di “parlare” attraverso il linguaggio del corpo. Orecchie e coda, infatti, sono essenziali per la comunicazione visivo-posturale del cane: in base alla posizione in avanti, all’indietro, schiacciate sulla testa, divaricate, inclinate o in movimento, le orecchie esprimono attenzione, aggressività, paura, sottomissione, tranquillità, sottolineano i segni di pacificazione, mostrano voglia di fare conoscenza; la coda si muove in modi diversi – rigida e alzata, in orizzontale, bassa, in mezzo alle zampe, con movimenti a scatti, rilassata, scodinzolante – per manifestare le stesse intenzioni e per capire quanto essa sia vitale basta pensare a un cane che non possa scodinzolare, forse l’atto che caratterizza nella maniera più immediata il suo rapporto con l’essere umano. Sono numerosissimi i gesti e i relativi messaggi che un cane rivela attraverso orecchie e coda e mutilarlo significa ridurre le sue capacità di relazionarsi con gli altri cani e con le persone. Un mutismo che certo non meritano dobermann, alani, boxer, cani corso, amstaff, dogo argentini, cani che al naturale rivelano la loro autentica bellezza, specialmente quando sono liberi di scuotere le loro grandi orecchie penzolanti e le loro lunghissime code, così piene di espressioni, “voci” ed emozioni.
