SI USTED PUEDE AYUDAR REALMENTE A OFRECERLE UN LUGAR DE ACOGIDA O TIENE ALGUNA PREGUNTA, POR FAVOR PÓNGASE EN CONTACTO MEDIANTE CORREO ELECTRÓNICO info@akitarescue.org.uk.

Meet beautiful Jai, a stunning 3 year old Japanese Akita Inu looking for an experienced forever home where she can finally relax, feel secure, and be appreciated for the wonderful dog she is. Jai is spayed, fully vaccinated, and ready to swap the uncertainty of recent months for a loving home and a comfy sofa of her very own. Jai’s Story Jai originally came to ARW as a home to home rehoming request after becoming increasingly uncomfortable living with a young crawling child. Sadly, this is something we see all too often in rescue. Dogs communicate when they are feeling overwhelmed, and it is our responsibility to recognise those signs and act before a situation escalates. Whilst we were actively trying to find Jai a new home, concerns grew about her welfare and the way she was being managed in public. Following an incident where her lead was accidentally dropped, Jai became tangled with a wheelie bin and ran down the road towards a member of the public and their dog. Although she never reached them and did nothing wrong herself, the incident understandably frightened those involved and resulted in the Metropolitan Police issuing her owner with a LEAD (Local Environmental Awareness on Dogs) warning. The issue was not Jai’s behaviour, but that she was not being kept under proper control. Sadly, despite this warning, further concerns followed. During one of our own meetings with Jai and her owner, she arrived on a flexi lead while the owner was distracted by their mobile phone, allowing Jai enough freedom to reach the edge of a busy main road before intervention. It was a frightening reminder of how quickly an accident can happen when handling any large, powerful breed. Following another incident, again linked to irresponsible handling rather than Jai’s temperament, ARW made the decision to bring her into kennels for her own safety and welfare. We feel it is important to share Jai’s story because it highlights an issue we are seeing more frequently. Akitas are intelligent, powerful hunting dogs that require attentive, responsible ownership. They should never be walked while the handler is distracted by a mobile phone, and we strongly discourage the use of extendable leads in public spaces. Flexi leads can reduce control, allow dogs to build significant momentum before reaching the end of the line, and can quickly create dangerous situations for the dog, their owner, and members of the public. Jai is now safe with ARW, and we are determined to find her the knowledgeable, committed home she truly deserves. About Jai True to her breed, Jai is everything you would expect from a Japanese Akita Inu. She is intelligent, independent, observant and quietly affectionate. She won’t constantly demand attention, but when she chooses to spend time with you, it makes those moments even more rewarding. When meeting new people, Jai can initially become excited and may jump up. This settles quickly with calm reassurance and a few tasty treats, after which she is content to relax nearby. Once she trusts you, Jai enjoys fuss and affection and is happy being handled. She even offers both paws on cue and already understands commands including “wait,” “stop,” and “give paw.” She is a clever girl who will thrive with continued positive, reward based training. Out and About Jai enjoys her walks and initially pulls on the lead through excitement before settling into a much nicer pace. With regular exercise, mental enrichment and some loose lead training, this should continue to improve. She is confident in busy environments and isn’t fazed by traffic, crowds or unfamiliar surroundings. Like many Japanese Akita Inu, Jai has a high prey drive and will happily chase squirrels, birds and other small animals if given the opportunity. For this reason, she cannot live with cats or small pets. Dog Interactions Having previously been attacked by other dogs, she will benefit from owners who understand how to advocate for their dog and avoid unnecessary interactions. She is looking for a home where she will be the only pet, allowing her to enjoy all the love and attention for herself. As with all Akitas, Jai should never be expected to greet every dog she encounters. Responsible ownership means recognising and respecting the breed’s natural characteristics rather than trying to change them. The Home Jai Needs Adult only home, or a family with sensible teenagers aged 16+ No young visiting children or grandchildren Owners with previous Akita or similar large, independent breed experience A calm, structured home with clear boundaries and routine Plenty of breed appropriate exercise and mental stimulation A home where she is the only pet Someone who is home for much of the day, as she would not enjoy being left alone for long periods Could You Be Jai’s Person? Jai is a loyal, intelligent and affectionate companion who simply needs owners willing to understand and embrace the unique characteristics of the Japanese Akita Inu. She has found herself in rescue through circumstances beyond her control, but we know her future can be very different. In the right home, with experienced owners who will advocate for her, respect her breed traits and provide the stability she needs, Jai will make an incredibly rewarding companion. If you think you could offer Jai the loving forever home she deserves, we’d love to hear from you.
