Jai now needs a calmer, adult only or family with teenagers aged 16+ environment where she can truly thrive. She is spayed, fully vaccinated, and ready to find a sofa (and humans) to call her own. When meeting new people in the home, Jai can be quite excitable at first. She may jump up, but this quickly settles with reassurance and tasty treats. Once relaxed, she is calm and affectionate, often choosing to lie down nearby. Her puppy like enthusiasm is largely due to frustration and lack of sufficient breed appropriate stimulation, something that will greatly improve in the right home. True to her breed, Jai is a typical Akita Inu: aloof, watchful, and independent. Sheโ€™ll come to you when she decides thereโ€™s something worth coming for! She is confident and unfazed by loud noises, crowds, or people she meets while out and about. Jai enjoys being handled and happily allows a fuss. Sheโ€™ll even offer both paws on request! This clever girl already knows cues such as โ€œgive paw,โ€ โ€œstop,โ€ and โ€œwait,โ€ showing great potential for further training. On walks, Jai can pull initially but soon settles. With regular exercise and some loose lead training, this should continue to improve. She has a high prey drive and has been known to chase birds, squirrels, and other small furries, therefore, no cats or small animals. Jai is very selective with other dogs. She may walk nicely alongside calm, large-breed canine companions following careful introductions, but she does not enjoy rude, boisterous, or vocal dogs. Having previously been attacked, her future owners must be confident and advocate for her and manage interactions carefully. Jai would need to be the only pet in the home, soaking up all the attention for herself. Jai is looking for: ๐Ÿพ An adult only home, or teenagers aged 16+ with no visiting young children or grandchildren ๐Ÿพ Breed experienced owners who understand Akita traits ๐Ÿพ A calm, structured environment with appropriate exercise and mental stimulation ๐ŸพA home where she can be the only pet ๐Ÿพ She would fare well in a home where sheโ€™s not left alone for long periods. Jai is a loyal, intelligent, and affectionate companion for the right person, one who appreciates the unique nature of the Japanese Akita Inu breed and is ready to offer her the stability and understanding she deserves. If you think you could be the perfect match for Jai, then please get in touch today.

About Jai

What life with Jai looks like

Jai is a large young adult akita dog waiting at Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK in United Kingdom.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible โ€” a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" โ€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures โ€” to let them settle.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งAdopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jai, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jai?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK handles screening and the adoption contract directly โ€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jai on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jai if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad โ€” Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra โ‚ฌ100โ€“โ‚ฌ350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jai already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported โ€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jai isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work โ€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jai and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect โ€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
