Adopter Toby

I need an experienced, adult only home with no visiting children. I would prefer to be an only dog and no cats please! I would like a secure garden to spend time in. I can walk well on a lead but can be reactive to bikes. Please read my information below. I was born with some deformed toes, which have been amputated. Toby is a handsome Cocker Spaniel who has been through a lot in his young life and is now looking for a special someone to help him write his next chapter. Originally coming to us from a breeder at just three months old, Toby was a very scared little puppy who found the world overwhelming. Although he found a loving home, he was sadly returned to our care after his adopters felt unable to manage some of his behaviours. Toby is still a sensitive soul and will need a calm, adult-only home with no visiting children. His new family should have experience with worried or complex dogs and be confident in helping him feel safe. He will need a home without cats as he has met them at the rescue, and was too interested. While he is generally affectionate and loving, Toby has shown some resource guarding tendencies, such as grumbling when people pass by his bed or the sofa when he is resting there. He did once nip his adopter. This was an isolated incident, but it’s important that any new adopters are comfortable managing and working with these behaviours using gentle, positive methods. That said, since being back with us Toby has come out of his shell beautifully. He greets staff with a wagging tail, and absolutely loves attention, affection, and food, especially food! Those who work with him absolutely adore him and think he is the most special and wonderful boy! Toby will be looking for a home where he can be the only dog. He did live with another dog previously and while they did get along, he did sometimes guard his adopter’s attention, so for this reason he is best suited to being homed as an only dog. Out and about, Toby enjoys his walks and is lovely on and off the lead. He has good recall and mixes well with other dogs, although he can be reactive to bicycles, so should only be let off lead in safe, secure areas away from the public. Toby was born with some deformed toes that were later amputated. He has always had a slightly unusual gait due to this, but our vets have noted he does also have a luxating patella and is on pain relief for this at the moment, but this may improve with gentle exercise. He also has a naturally short tail, which just adds to his unique charm. Toby is a sweet, loving boy who truly wants to connect. He has already won the hearts of everyone here, and we’re all rooting for him to find a calm, understanding home where he can feel safe, build trust, and thrive. If you have the time, patience, and experience to offer Toby the gentle guidance he needs, he will reward you with loyalty, love, and plenty of cuddles. Toby’s one year anniversary with us is slowly approaching, and it honestly breaks my heart every day knowing he’s still not curled up on a sofa in a home of his own. Toby is literally such an amazing dog when he knows you, all he wants to do is spend time with you, whether that be sitting with you, or going out for a gentle stroll! Recently, I’ve been working on Toby’s lead reactivity, and he’s been doing incredibly well. He’s making such good progress, and I’m so proud of how far he’s come! I really hope this is the last update I have to write about toby, hopefully his next updates will be coming from his new pawrents, showing us him blossoming in a home and how truly special he really is! I’ve had the absolute joy of working with Toby for a couple of months now, and he truly is one of my more sensitive, special boys! Once Toby gets to know you, he turns into the happiest, most affectionate little soul you could ever meet! He absolutely loves zooming around our big play yard, or heading out for a calm, gentle stroll along the lanes taking everything in at his own pace, Toby can be reactive towards passing cars or other dogs, it is something we are currently working on with him! With the weather getting nicer, I decided it was the perfect day for a little adventure down to the river! To get there, we walk through a huge open field, so I popped Toby on a long line to give him some extra freedom to explore.I don’t think I’ve ever seen a dog so happy he spent most of his time rolling around on his back in the grass with the biggest grin on his face! When we reached the river, Toby was a little unsure at first. He sat at the edge, watching the water. But after a few minutes of building up his courage, he dipped his paws in and that was it, he was happily paddling back and forth, enjoying every second. It was such a special moment to watch. I truly adore Toby with my whole heart, he’s one of those dogs who just stays with you, always on your mind. He can still feel a bit unsure when meeting new people and might bark or back away at first, but give him a little time and patience, and he’ll become your most loyal, loving best friend. I honestly can’t believe Toby is still waiting for his forever home. He is such a gentle, beautiful soul who deserves the absolute best life has to offer! Toby is a sweet older gentleman who truly enjoys the quieter side of life. He loves nothing more than snuggling up for a nap and being close to his people. Toby still has a playful spark and enjoys his daily walks as well as pottering around the yard. He would thrive in a calm, peaceful home and is best suited to a household with no children or cats, where he can relax and enjoy his golden years in comfort. I love Toby. He is so loved by many of us here at the rescue. He's a confident boy once he knows you, but until he feels comfortable around you he can bark and sometimes be a bit standoffish. Toby is a big cuddle bunny, he absolutely loves a fuss, and will happily accept butt scratches any time of the day. He enjoys going out for walks but absolutely loves being off lead and running around the big play yard, when his butt wiggles with happiness and excitement it really doesn't stop, it's super adorable. He likes chasing a tennis ball but he won't bring it back, instead he rolls around with it usually in his mouth and will then lay with it and play with it, he's a comical boy. Again, once he's comfortable with you he's very easy to handle, I can get a coat or a jumper on him with no problems, I can pick him up and I can brush him with no problems, he had a groom recently and he was no issue at all. It's a shame he keeps getting overlooked, yes he might have some typical cocker issues such as guarding, but it hasn't been a huge issue since he's been here, I can go in and out of his kennel, pick things up etc and he's been fine. I've also been yarding him with other dogs to try and socialise him more, and although he can be selective of who he likes, once he's found a friend then he just wants to play. He is a beautiful boy inside and out, and in my opinion anyone would be lucky to have him as part of their family. Also he is kennel clean so house training shouldn't take any time at all. Please, don't let Toby spend another year in kennels, he truly deserves to find his forever home, as they all do. It's getting colder, it's been snowing, a nice warm, cosy house with a loving family is what he wants, I know his forever home is out there somewhere so please come and find him. Toby is still doing incredibly well with us here and hasn’t shown any signs of guarding, while this has stopped with us here we still are unsure how he will react in a home environment. It is an absolute pleasure working with Toby and he always brings a smile to your face throughout the day. Toby is a gentle, loving and happy boy and is desperate to have somebody he can give all his love to. Toby has definitely come out of his shell since he's been here, he still barks when you first see him but it's a happy bark and his tail doesn't stop, before he would stay fo
