Adozioni ferme da tre mesi e aumentano gli abbandoni adopteren

The dog shelter is full, with more than 40 dogs present. Some are elderly dogs, destined to spend their remaining days in the shelter, but the volunteers ensure they have some walks to make their day less monotonous. There are also young mixed-breed dogs, some coming from difficult situations, others from the medical shelter, and still others from abandonments. A couple of dogs have recently left the shelter for a "trial" period, which we hope will end in adoption, but the last adoption was Billy - a dog whose story we couldn't tell because it was linked to a situation handled together with the Belluno municipality and required confidentiality - and this adoption dates back almost three months. In this time, the shelter has been visited by many people, some apparently interested in adopting one of the residents. Most, however, continue to look for "puppies," even though their age would suggest companionship with an older dog, and quite often they ask for dogs of a specific color, short-haired (so they soil less), maybe of a breed: not finding what they want, these people leave telling us they will go to some "volunteer" who brings dogs from the South to Belluno, where there is a variety of breeds, ages, and colors! In this summer full of abandonments, we have connected many private individuals and guaranteed a future to several adults who never even passed through the animal shelter, and puppies from unwanted pregnancies of female dogs that should have been sterilized because their owners were incapable of managing even themselves! But the space for adoptions is not infinite, and we have probably reached a saturation point. This situation is the result of many factors: the human population is decreasing and aging; a "consumerism" that fuels the purchase of purebred dogs, sometimes even online, and often the buyers do not know how to respect their ethological characteristics; an illegal puppy trade that thrives even in the province, as well as the long-term activity of many people - especially women - who have moved towards shelters in the South with great emotional involvement and, almost always, in "good faith," but often with much improvisation and lack of preparation, poorly managing pre-adoptions and selections, bringing animals affected by diseases that had disappeared from the province years ago or accepting animals transported by staff that were narcotized and turned out to be unmanageable upon arrival. Many such dogs have arrived at the animal shelter, and a large part of the problems related to the recent summer's abandonments involve just those brought from the South: young Dobermans placed in families with newborns, too lively Schnauzers, small-sized puppies guaranteed that turn out too big for an apartment, and so on. Apaca is collaborating on the LAV project to restructure the Palermo dog shelter: therefore, we do not lack sensitivity towards such difficult realities, but the flow of dogs from the South has been and is - in numbers and characteristics - an animal trafficking that hides too many interests (economic, certainly) and, at times, human weaknesses, such as the 'animalist' protagonism of those who ship them and also of those who act as intermediaries. A civilized country should not have tolerated such a phenomenon: instead, many have closed their eyes, and those who have thrown themselves into the fight to help can only note that straying is spreading more and worse than before! Il canile-rifugio è al completo, con più di 40 cani presenti. Si tratta, in parte, di cani anziani – destinati ormai a finire i propri giorni in canile, ma ai quali i volontari non fanno mancare quel po' di passeggiate che rende la loro giornata meno monotona – ma anche di giovani meticci, alcuni provenienti da detenzioni difficili, altri dal canile sanitario e altri ancora da abbandoni. Ci sono un paio di cani che, proprio in questi giorni, hanno lasciato il canile per un periodo di “prova” che speriamo si concluda con l'adozione, ma l'ultimo affido è stato quello di Billy -un cane di cui non abbiamo potuto raccontare la storia, perchè legato a una vicenda gestita insieme al comune di Belluno e su cui era necessario il riserbo- ed è un'adozione che risale a quasi tre mesi fa. In questo lasso di tempo, il canile è stato visitato da molte persone, alcune delle quali apparentemente interessate ad adottare uno degli ospiti. La maggior parte, però, continua a cercare “cuccioli” anche se ha un'età che consiglierebbe la compagnia di un cane anziano e, non di rado, chiede di cani dal colore ben preciso, con pelo corto (così sporca meno), magari di razza: non trovando ciò che cercano, queste persone se ne vanno dicendoci che si rivolgeranno a qualche “volontaria” che porta a Belluno cani dal sud, dove c'è varietà di razze, età e colori! In quest'estate piena di abbandoni, abbiamo messo in contatto molti privati e garantito un futuro a qualche decina di adulti che non sono neppure transitati per il rifugio e di cuccioli frutto di gravidanze indesiderate di femmine che, invece, andrebbero sterilizzate perchè di proprietari incapaci di gestire anche se stessi! Ma gli spazi per le adozioni non sono infiniti e molto probabilmente siamo arrivati molto vicini a un punto di saturazione. Una situazione che è conseguenza di tanti fattori: la popolazione umana che cala e invecchia; un “consumismo” che alimenta acquisti di cani di razza, a volte perfino su internet , di cui chi li compera spesso non saprà rispettare le caratteristiche etologiche; un commercio illegale di cuccioli che prospera pure in provincia, ma anche la pluriennale attività di tante persone – soprattutto donne – che si sono mosse nei confronti dei canili del Sud con grande trasporto emotivo e, quasi sempre, in “buona fede”, ma spessissimo con tanta improvvisazione e impreparazione, gestendo malamente i pre-affidi e le selezioni, portando esemplari affetti da malattie che in provincia erano scomparse da anni o accettando dalle staffette animali che venivano narcotizzati per il trasporto e, una volta a destinazione, risultavano ingestibili. Di cani così ne sono arrivati anche in rifugio e una buona parte dei problemi degli abbandoni dell'estate appena finita riguarda proprio esemplari fatti venire dal sud: giovani ‘doberman' inseriti in famiglie con neonati, ‘schnauzer' troppo vivaci, cuccioli garantiti di taglia piccola che invece diventano troppo grandi per un appartamento, e così via. Apaca sta collaborando al progetto LAV di rifondazione del canile di Palermo: quindi, non ci manca la sensibilità verso realtà così difficili, ma il flusso di cani dal Sud è stato ed è – per numeri e caratteristiche- un traffico di animali che nasconde troppi interessi (economici di sicuro) e, a volte, debolezze umane, come il protagonismo ‘animalista' di chi spedisce ma anche di chi fa da intermediario. Un paese civile non avrebbe dovuto tollerare un fenomeno simile: invece, in molti hanno chiuso gli occhi e chi si è gettato nella mischia per aiutare in realtà non può che constatare che il randagismo al Sud dilaga più e peggio di prima! Ecco perchè BERRY, BRICK, JOKER, LENNY, SBERLA,WILLY, BRISCOLA, CALIMERO, CHUPITO, FIOCCO, GIOIA, MORO, NIKY, SKY, YOGHI, ANAKYN, BETTY, BLANCO, BUBBA, EMMA, EVITA, NERONE, ALEX, PUCCI, TOPO GIGIO, MAX, OBELIX, PELMO, JERRY, PABLO, REX, LUCKY, SELVA, SOFIA e tutti gli altri…aspettano…
