A walk should be a quality time. A walk is truly an important moment for the dog and its relationships. For this reason, and because there is not always enough time for long trips, a walk with one's own dog must be of high quality! Obviously, a path in nature is preferable to walking alongside busy roads or crowded sidewalks where smells are more or less always the same and movements are influenced by traffic and crowds. But even city routes can become more satisfying if the dog is not made to walk unnecessarily beside you and if you give him all the time he needs to sniff or meet another dog or take a detour to follow a scent: if instead, the pace of the walk is dictated by the person's needs and habits, it will almost certainly be a "bad" walk for the dog. But it is not enough to have a comfortable harness (preferably a Norwegian or H-type), a long leash (but not retractable ones) and an interesting route to make the walk better for the dog: it also requires that the person accompanying him remains always connected with the dog. First of all, it means monitoring the dog's emotional state - attention that will allow, for example, to anticipate his lunge towards a dog crossing paths or towards the middle of the street in an attempt to reach a cat - and to avoid frustrations, such as pulling on the leash for too long sniffing or stopping for a thorough marking. Equally important, it is sharing the entire walk with him, never losing visual and verbal communication, and activating together active behaviors, such as changing sidewalks when meeting a leashed dog showing fear or aggression or a person who recoils at the sight of the dog or has difficulty moving. All this and much more makes the walk satisfying for the dog, but also for the person accompanying him, who, not remaining passive and indifferent, will have the opportunity to make the outing with the dog a lively and pleasant activity, to the point that he will eventually be able to distinguish whether the dog is sniffing a male or female dog's urine or a dog he likes or one he fears. That is why the cellphone should definitely be turned off!

La passeggiata deve essere un momento di qualità La passeggiata è davvero un momento importante per il cane e per le sue relazioni. Proprio per questo e perchè non sempre c'è il tempo per lunghi tragitti, la passeggiata col proprio cane deve essere di qualità! Ovviamente, un percorso in natura è preferibile rispetto alla passeggiata a lato di strade trafficate o lungo marciapiedi affollati in cui anche gli odori sono più o meno sempre gli stessi e i movimenti risultano condizionati dal traffico e dall'affollamento. Ma anche i percorsi cittadini diventano più soddisfacenti se non lo si fa camminare inutilmente al proprio fianco e se si dà al cane tutto il tempo che serve per annussare o per incontrare un altro cane o fare una deviazione per seguire un odore: se, invece, i ritmi della passeggiata li dettano le esigenze e le abitudini della persona che lo accompagna, sarà quasi certamente una “pessima” passeggiata per il cane. Ma non bastano una comoda pettorina (meglio comunque se tipo norvegese o ad H), un guinzaglio lungo (ma non quelli retrattili) e un percorso interessante a rendere la passeggiata migliore per il cane: ci vuole anche che la persona che lo accompagna si mantenga sempre in connessione col cane. Anzitutto, si tratterà di monitorare il livello emozionale del cane – attenzione che permetterà ad esempio, di anticipare un suo scatto verso un cane che si sta incrociando o verso il centro della strada nel tentativo di raggiungere un gatto – e di evitargli frustrazioni, come ad esempio, lo strattonamento per un'annusata troppo lunga o una sosta per una accurata marcatura. E altrettanto importante, sarà condividere con lui l'intera passeggiata, non perdendo mai la comunicazione visiva ma anche verbale e attivando insieme comportamenti attivi, come, ad esempio, cambiare marciapiede quando si incontra un cane al guinzaglio che manifesta paura o aggressività oppure una persona che si ritrae alla vista del cane o ha difficoltà a deambulare. Tutto questo e molto, molto altro rende la passeggiata soddisfacente per il cane, ma anche per la persona che lo accompagna, che non rimanendo passiva e indifferente avrà l'opportunità di rendere l'uscita col cane un'attività viva e piacevole, al punto che arriverà un momento in cui saprà distinguere se il cane sta annusando la pipì di un altro maschio o di una femmina oppure di un cane che gli è simpatico o che invece teme. Ecco perchè il cellulare va sicuramente silenziato!
