Când se simte în siguranță și la ușor, zâmbește către tine. Este acel zâmbet canin, destul de rar, unde ridică partea superioară a buzei pentru a-și arăta dinți și gengive, inclinând ușor capul în sus. Când nu se simte confortabil, ceea ce se întâmplă adesea, își ține coada între picioare și se blochează, nedeterminat cum să reacționeze la ceva care-l face neliniștit. Morfeas nostru s-a născut pe stradă, cu mama lui încercând să-l țină el și frații lui călduroși și în siguranță sub un autovehicul. A crescut în adăpost. Asta știe, și aproape nimic altceva. Nu este genul de câine care vine să te salute cu coada zbârlită, iar nu este genul de câine pe care l-ai aduce acasă și ai simți imediat că-ți schimbi viața. Probabil, la început, va sta într-un colț, temerindu-se și fiind confuz, dorind să rămână acolo până înțelege ce se întâmplă. El se va deschide treptat, cu răbdare și constanță. După o săptămână, poate două sau trei, va zbârli ușor coada. După o lună, poate două sau trei, îți va arăta zâmbetul. Într-un moment dat, vei deveni prezența cea mai importantă, cea mai valoroasă, cea mai iubită din viața lui. Și atunci vei simți că l-ai ajutat cu adevărat, că-ți ai schimbat viața, că ai făcut cea mai bună decizie pe care cineva a făcut-o vreodată pentru el.

When he feels safe and at ease, he smiles at you. It’s that canine smile, quite rare, where he lifts his upper lip to show his teeth and gums, tilting his head slightly upward. When he doesn’t feel comfortable, which happens often, he tucks his tail between his legs and freezes, unsure of how to handle whatever is making him anxious. Our Morfeas was born on the street, with his mother trying to keep him and his siblings warm and safe under a car. He grew up in the shelter. That’s what he knows, and very little else. He’s not the kind of dog who will come to greet you with a wagging tail, and he’s not the kind of dog you’ll take home and immediately feel that you’ve changed his life. Most likely, at first, he will sit in a corner, scared and confused, wanting to stay there until he understands what’s going on. He will open up slowly, with patience and consistency. After a week, maybe two or three, he might timidly wag his tail. After a month, maybe two or three, he will show you his smile. At some point, you will become the most important, the most valuable, the most beloved presence in his life. And that’s when you’ll feel that you truly helped him, that you changed his life, that you made the best decision anyone has ever made for him.
