Quando ele se sente seguro e tranquilo, ele sorri para você. É esse sorriso canino, bastante raro, em que ele levanta o lábio superior para mostrar os dentes e as gengivas, inclinando ligeiramente a cabeça para cima. Quando ele não se sente confortável, o que acontece com frequência, ele coloca a cauda entre as pernas e fica imóvel, não sabendo como lidar com o que o está deixando ansioso. Nosso Morfeas nasceu na rua, com sua mãe tentando mantê-lo e seus irmãos aquecidos e seguros sob um carro. Ele cresceu no abrigo. É isso que ele conhece, e muito pouco mais. Ele não é o tipo de cão que vem te cumprimentar com a cauda abanando, e ele não é o tipo de cão que você leva para casa e imediatamente sente que mudou a vida dele. Provavelmente, no início, ele ficará num canto, assustado e confuso, querendo ficar lá até entender o que está acontecendo. Ele se abrirá lentamente, com paciência e consistência. Depois de uma semana, talvez duas ou três, ele pode abanar timidamente a cauda. Depois de um mês, talvez dois ou três, ele te mostrará seu sorriso. Em algum momento, você se tornará a presença mais importante, mais valiosa, mais amada da vida dele. E será então que você sentirá que realmente o ajudou, que mudou a vida dele, que fez a melhor decisão que alguém já fez por ele.

When he feels safe and at ease, he smiles at you. It’s that canine smile, quite rare, where he lifts his upper lip to show his teeth and gums, tilting his head slightly upward. When he doesn’t feel comfortable, which happens often, he tucks his tail between his legs and freezes, unsure of how to handle whatever is making him anxious. Our Morfeas was born on the street, with his mother trying to keep him and his siblings warm and safe under a car. He grew up in the shelter. That’s what he knows, and very little else. He’s not the kind of dog who will come to greet you with a wagging tail, and he’s not the kind of dog you’ll take home and immediately feel that you’ve changed his life. Most likely, at first, he will sit in a corner, scared and confused, wanting to stay there until he understands what’s going on. He will open up slowly, with patience and consistency. After a week, maybe two or three, he might timidly wag his tail. After a month, maybe two or three, he will show you his smile. At some point, you will become the most important, the most valuable, the most beloved presence in his life. And that’s when you’ll feel that you truly helped him, that you changed his life, that you made the best decision anyone has ever made for him.
