Als hij zich veilig en ontspannen voelt, glimlacht hij naar je. Het is die hondenglimlach, vrij zeldzaam, waarbij hij zijn bovenlip optilt om zijn tanden en kaken te tonen en zijn hoofd lichtjes omhoog tilt. Als hij zich niet comfortabel voelt, wat vaak gebeurt, trekt hij zijn staart onder zijn benen en bevriest, onzeker hoe hij moet omgaan met wat hem onrust geeft. Onze Morfeas is op straat geboren, terwijl zijn moeder probeerde hem en zijn broers en zussen warm en veilig onder een auto te houden. Hij is opgegroeid in het dierenasiel. Dat is alles wat hij kent, en verder niets. Hij is niet het soort hond dat je komt begroeten met een wappende staart, en hij is ook niet het soort hond dat je mee naar huis neemt en direct het gevoel hebt dat je zijn leven hebt veranderd. Waarschijnlijk zal hij eerst in een hoek zitten, bang en verward, en willen blijven zitten tot hij begrijpt wat er gaande is. Hij zal langzaam openen, met geduld en consistentie. Na een week, misschien twee of drie, zou hij timide zijn staart kunnen wapperen. Na een maand, misschien twee of drie, laat hij je zijn glimlach zien. Op een bepaald moment wordt jij de belangrijkste, de meest waardevolle, de meest geliefde aanwezigheid in zijn leven. En dan zul je het gevoel hebben dat je echt geholpen hebt, dat je zijn leven hebt veranderd, dat je de beste beslissing ooit voor hem hebt genomen.

When he feels safe and at ease, he smiles at you. It’s that canine smile, quite rare, where he lifts his upper lip to show his teeth and gums, tilting his head slightly upward. When he doesn’t feel comfortable, which happens often, he tucks his tail between his legs and freezes, unsure of how to handle whatever is making him anxious. Our Morfeas was born on the street, with his mother trying to keep him and his siblings warm and safe under a car. He grew up in the shelter. That’s what he knows, and very little else. He’s not the kind of dog who will come to greet you with a wagging tail, and he’s not the kind of dog you’ll take home and immediately feel that you’ve changed his life. Most likely, at first, he will sit in a corner, scared and confused, wanting to stay there until he understands what’s going on. He will open up slowly, with patience and consistency. After a week, maybe two or three, he might timidly wag his tail. After a month, maybe two or three, he will show you his smile. At some point, you will become the most important, the most valuable, the most beloved presence in his life. And that’s when you’ll feel that you truly helped him, that you changed his life, that you made the best decision anyone has ever made for him.
