Quando si sente sicuro e a suo agio, ti sorride. È quel sorriso canino, abbastanza raro, in cui alza la sua labbra superiori per mostrare i denti e le gengive, inclinando leggermente la testa verso l'alto. Quando non si sente a proprio agio, cosa che accade spesso, tira la coda tra le gambe e si blocca, incerto su come gestire ciò che lo rende ansioso. Il nostro Morfeas è nato per strada, con sua madre che cercava di tenerlo e ai suoi fratelli caldi e al sicuro sotto un'auto. È cresciuto nel rifugio. È questo ciò che conosce, e molto poco altro. Non è il tipo di cane che viene a salutarti con la coda che scodinzola, e non è il tipo di cane che porterai a casa e sentirai immediatamente di aver cambiato la sua vita. Probabilmente, all'inizio, starà in un angolo, spaventato e confuso, desiderando rimanere lì finché non capirà cosa sta succedendo. Si aprirà lentamente, con pazienza e costanza. Dopo una settimana, forse due o tre, potrebbe scodinzolare timidamente la coda. Dopo un mese, forse due o tre, ti mostrerà il suo sorriso. A un certo punto, diventerai la presenza più importante, la più preziosa, la più amata nella sua vita. E sarà allora che sentirai di aver davvero aiutato lui, di aver cambiato la sua vita, di aver fatto la migliore decisione che qualcuno abbia mai preso per lui.

When he feels safe and at ease, he smiles at you. It’s that canine smile, quite rare, where he lifts his upper lip to show his teeth and gums, tilting his head slightly upward. When he doesn’t feel comfortable, which happens often, he tucks his tail between his legs and freezes, unsure of how to handle whatever is making him anxious. Our Morfeas was born on the street, with his mother trying to keep him and his siblings warm and safe under a car. He grew up in the shelter. That’s what he knows, and very little else. He’s not the kind of dog who will come to greet you with a wagging tail, and he’s not the kind of dog you’ll take home and immediately feel that you’ve changed his life. Most likely, at first, he will sit in a corner, scared and confused, wanting to stay there until he understands what’s going on. He will open up slowly, with patience and consistency. After a week, maybe two or three, he might timidly wag his tail. After a month, maybe two or three, he will show you his smile. At some point, you will become the most important, the most valuable, the most beloved presence in his life. And that’s when you’ll feel that you truly helped him, that you changed his life, that you made the best decision anyone has ever made for him.
