Adopt Abel

Podenco · Male

Description Our Spanish animal welfare workers report: The "owner" of Abel is unfortunately already known to the helpers at the animal shelter in Spain. This is because the animal welfare workers have taken in more than just this fur nose from the cold-blooded hunter, and none of these souls had a beautiful past. Our beautiful Abel is no different! The dog was secured by police at the "owner's" house after being locked in a room without natural light for a full 8 months! It was a long journey to free Abel. One can imagine that such trauma is not easily overcome by our dear male dog. But Abel does not give up! Understandably, he is (still) shy around people, especially men. However, the term "fearful dog" is misplaced here. Abel is blossoming day by day and making progress. He can now rejoice over familiar faces, allows himself to be petted, and can finally play very well with his fellow animals. Other four-legged friends provide Abel with the necessary security to grow further into a "normal life." Female dogs, in particular, have won the heart of this Casanova. In their presence, he grows beyond himself and feels more confident. It would be perfect if Abel could move into a home with an existing female dog. Additionally, one should always remember what this poor guy has been through. A rural area with more peace than in the big city would do him good. He has no problem with children—however, they should already be of an appropriate age to understand the right way to interact with the fur nose. Abel is ready for a new, secure, and cozy life (with sunshine!). But please: if there is a garden, it must be well-secured. Double safety (safety harness and collar) is essential for him during the first period. Does anyone have a charming female dog at home who is yearning for her dream prince? Because here he is! About Abel

What life with Abel looks like

Abel is a large adult podenco dog waiting at Tierischgeholfen e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Abel, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Abel?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierischgeholfen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Abel on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Abel if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierischgeholfen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Abel already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Abel isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierischgeholfen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Abel and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
