Adopt Agatha

Staffordshire Bull Terrier · Female · Senior · 10 years

Agatha came to us at 1 ½ years old, initially as a found animal that was tied up in the woods. But quickly it became clear that the young female dog had already endured a lot. Despite her young age, she had already gone through a pregnancy. Agatha knew nothing at first, was primarily afraid, and was very intimidated. Her insecurity quickly turned into overwhelm. On walks, she bit at the leash and lost her nerve at the sight of other dogs. Each round through the woods became a battle because once she loses her composure, it's hard to help her get back on track. Since then, Agatha has exclusively worn a muzzle on walks with us, as she also reacts very insecurely to strangers. However, her behavior has improved significantly through consistent training. She needs people who take the responsibility of handling her in the outside world away and convey security and consistency to her. Generally, Agatha is compatible with male dogs, like most female dogs, and she is friendly and cuddly towards people she trusts. Still, she must be consistently handled, because if she gets the impression that she's in charge, all training progress is lost. The young female dog is not one of the big athletes; in the summer, she generally struggles with the heat due to her anatomy and prefers short walks in the shade. We would like to see her in a home that has already had experience with her breed (or other headstrong individuals) and offers her a loving but consistent home where she can gain trust and have a secure place in a social structure. Because rules and rituals take away her great responsibility, and in a structured environment with the right people by her side, she is a wonderful dog. Gets along with other dogs.

About Agatha

What life with Agatha looks like

Agatha is a large senior staffordshire bull terrier dog waiting at Bertha-Bruch-Tierheim Saarbrücken in Saarbrücken.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Agatha, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Agatha?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Bertha-Bruch-Tierheim Saarbrücken handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Agatha on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Agatha if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Bertha-Bruch-Tierheim Saarbrücken will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Agatha already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Agatha isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Bertha-Bruch-Tierheim Saarbrücken early rather than rehoming privately; they know Agatha and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
