Adopt Akil

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 20 years

Akil is a male beauty with black-glossy fur. Picture perfect. If one looks closer at a picture, one sees his pinched-up penis between his hind legs. This says a lot about Akil’s condition, which has little to do with his outward grace. Akil is a dog for a seasoned dog professional who knows and can relate to fearful dogs. Akil needs a real, lifelong chance to slowly and gently lose or minimize his fear. A real and long-term task for both human and dog to bond them into a team. His very sad background is brief: His mother, Ronda, was rescued from a kill shelter. Initially, it was not known that she had three puppies (Akil, Anubis, and Donkor, who all look identical), which were left behind in the kill shelter. When it became known that she had puppies, they were also taken to the animal shelter. In what pitiful, frightened state they were—both mentally and physically—I will not elaborate further. But of course, it had profound effects on their entire development. The three dogs only know the kill shelter as a place of extreme (separation) fear and the animal shelter. Akil approaches a person very cautiously, sniffs at them, and then retreats. Being close to people is still very difficult for him. He is absolutely submissive and sometimes allows being petted. Wearing a harness and leash is now possible, but going for a walk outside the shelter is not yet in the cards. Akil is not accustomed to being led on a leash by a person. The animal shelter is only very conditionally a place to learn social behavior, unless it has a special program for the dogs. There is a lack of a constant primary caregiver, the time, the patience, and the consistency. In the right environment with the right understanding, patient, loving, experienced person, a lot is possible. Dogs can learn throughout their lives. © 2006-2024 by animal welfare association Europa e.V.

About Akil

What life with Akil looks like

Akil is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Akil, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Akil?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Akil on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Akil if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Akil already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Akil isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Akil and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
