adoption requirements adoption process Now request this animal! adoption requirements adoption process Alastair has finally found a home! His story: Our polar bear Alastair does not want to spend the rest of his life in the shelter! Do you have a warm dog bed for our big guy? Alastair is a great, approximately 12-year-old male dog. At 60 cm and 35 kg, he belongs to the larger breeds. Although Alastair is definitely not a young pup anymore, he is still far from being old! He wants to move and also be mentally challenged. Experience has shown that attending a positively run dog training class works well for all dogs, regardless of age. Where else could it be better to train together, build a strong bond between dog and human, and allow Alastair to meet many different fellow animals? Our gentle giant gets along well with other dogs and is also very friendly with humans. He has beautiful, soft fur and is undoubtedly a stunning sight! Due to his appearance, we suspect that Alastair has herding genes and thus likely comes with corresponding traits that his new family should be prepared to deal with. It would be great for Alastair to have an enclosed yard or a field. Herding dogs are independent personalities that require their owner to have the ability to be consistent and empathetic, and the capacity to deal with an intelligent, independent-minded dog. People who have already had experience with herding dogs do not want any other breeds, as they are very loyal and devoted companions. They have a very calm and gentle nature but are also vigilant. Due to his short snout, he is unfortunately not allowed to enter Switzerland. Alastair probably hasn't lived in a house yet. Therefore, it is especially important to let him set the pace from the beginning. With patience and empathy, he will quickly settle in. A foster home would also be a great opportunity for him. Our Alastair is microchipped, vaccinated, flea-treated, dewormed, and has his own EU pet passport. Due to his age, he travels unneutered. He can enter Switzerland after a positive finding. Does our dear polar bear Alastair find his new home with you? Many thanks, A.S.! You have given Alastair a name and thus an identity! Many thanks Klaus P.! You support Alastair with a monthly sponsorship! As of: 02.06.

Vielen Dank, A.S.! Vielen Dank Klaus P.! Du unterstützt Alastair mit einer monatlichen Patenschaft! Stand: 02.06.2024

About Alastair

What life with Alastair looks like

Alastair is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Alastair, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Alastair?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Alastair on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Alastair if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Alastair already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Alastair isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Alastair and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
