Alfie

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 5 years

In the animal shelter since: September 2026 Estimated age: born approx. March 2021 Estimated shoulder height: 30–39 cm Estimated weight: 5–9 kg Meet Alfie here directly in the video! Little Alfie has so much love to give Sometimes it is the dogs themselves who take the first step. When our team was out in Romania to pick up other dogs for neutering, the helpers discovered little Alfie on the street. But instead of keeping their distance, the friendly male came straight up to them and greeted them. That is how Alfie was also taken into our partner shelter, and he now has the chance of a home of his own. Even at the shelter, Alfie shows how much he loves having people around him. As soon as our helpers step into his enclosure, he comes over wagging his tail and most of all likes to sit right down on their lap. He enjoys being petted and has even developed a little way of asking for more attention: if people stop stroking him, Alfie moves closer or gently taps them with his paw. He is equally friendly toward men and women. He also greets new visitors with curiosity and enjoys being petted by them. Occasionally, however, he turns his head away while being stroked, so his body language should be paid close attention to. Alfie is also interested in his surroundings. When he hears noises, he watches attentively outside but usually stays near his visitors. He already responds to calls and whistles and comes running. When he is not occupied, he can also sit down calmly and wait. Alfie currently shares his enclosure with a female dog. Based on our observations so far, we cannot yet make a final statement about his compatibility with other dogs. Fur-nose Alfie is still new to the shelter. Our caregivers take the time to get to know and assess every dog. Once we know more about this fur-nose's character, we will supplement this profile. Of course, you can already fill out a self-disclosure form for this dog. For Alfie, we wish for loving people who enjoy his closeness and at the same time give him the space he needs. So far, the little male has shown himself to be friendly, open, and cuddly. Nevertheless, he still needs to get to know life in a real home and should be introduced to new situations patiently. On the street, Alfie himself took the first step toward our helpers. Now he only lacks a person with whom he can permanently find his place, ideally very close on their lap. For this fur-nose, we wish for people who are aware that shelter dogs bring a certain history with them. We can never predict in the shelter how a dog will react to life in Germany. That is why we are looking for people who bring patience, perseverance, and goodwill. But one thing is certain: whoever adopts rather than buys not only gives an animal a second chance, but actively decides against animal suffering – and for a life with a very special companion by their side. Already fallen in love? Send us a self-disclosure form! Adoption If you are considering adoption, first read through the placement process. All dogs are vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas, and neutered before departure (exceptions are puppies up to 6 months and very old dogs). Dogs older than 1 year are also tested for Mediterranean diseases. If you have any further questions, feel free to write to our placement team.

About Alfie

What life with Alfie looks like

Alfie is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hunderettung Europa e.V. in Duisburg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Alfie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Alfie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hunderettung Europa e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Alfie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Alfie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hunderettung Europa e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Alfie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Alfie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hunderettung Europa e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Alfie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
