ALVIM

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

The owner of ALVIM passed away in a house fire, and ALVIM and his brother were left on their own for months at the site where the house used to be. They lived among the burned ruins, trying to survive and find food. A few months later, they were brought to our shelter. ALVIM arrived with us very thin and sick. He tested positive for leishmaniasis and immediately began appropriate treatment. Currently, he takes Alopurinol daily and is recovering strength. Leishmaniasis is not a death sentence; positive dogs can live many years with a good quality of life. ALVIM has suffered enough and deserves a home full of love. ALVIM is an extremely sweet dog who forms a very strong bond with people. When he gains confidence, he becomes a true shadow of those he loves. He is incredibly gentle, very grateful for any attention, and gets along well with all other dogs. He also walks well on a leash. He will be delivered vaccinated, dewormed, neutered, and microchipped.

PT·Show original

About ALVIM

What life with ALVIM looks like

ALVIM is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting ALVIM, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about ALVIM?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw ALVIM on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt ALVIM if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is ALVIM already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if ALVIM isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know ALVIM and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
