GERDA

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 8 years

A GERDA was found on the street two years ago and ended up being adopted. Now, two years later, she was found on the street again, but this time she had a microchip, as all the dogs we place for adoption do. The microchip was registered in the name of the adopter. The person who found her took her to the address associated with the microchip, only to discover that no one lived there anymore and the house was abandoned. Thus, the GERDA ended up being brought to the shelter. Someone at the shelter managed to contact the man registered on the microchip, and the response was simply, "I don't have any dog," blocking the number to prevent further contact. There was no mistake; it was exactly the same person who had adopted the GERDA two years earlier, and the data matched. The explanation is simple: they moved and abandoned the female dog on the street, then disconnected their phone to avoid being found. The poor GERDA deserves much better. She is an extremely gentle dog. She can do practically anything, she just wants attention and affection. She follows people, lies down when asked, can be calm for hours, follows whoever calls her, and walks well on a leash. She gets along beautifully with all dogs, regardless of size, age, or gender. She is sweet to everyone. She is simply a very gentle, balanced, and easy-to-adapt dog for a new home. Whoever chooses her will have a wonderful companion. The GERDA will be delivered vaccinated, dewormed, spayed, and with a microchip.

PT·Show original

About GERDA

What life with GERDA looks like

GERDA is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting GERDA, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about GERDA?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw GERDA on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt GERDA if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is GERDA already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if GERDA isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know GERDA and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
