Amadou

Mixed Breed · Male

Amadou—a gentle giant—awaits his great fortune. Amadou spent a long time at the Perrera in the southern part of the island, patiently waiting to finally be seen. While many other dogs loudly vied for attention, this stately Podenco preferred to stay quietly in the background. Nevertheless, during our visits, he often stood hopefully by the fence, eagerly anticipating a few loving pettings. The sensitive male dog thoroughly enjoyed every single bit of attention—even the tiniest gesture brought tears to our eyes each time we had to leave him behind. When a spot finally became available on our finca, Amadou was allowed to leave his kennel behind. His joy was indescribable. Already on the very first morning, he stood on his hind legs with boundless enthusiasm, his front paws wagging happily toward us. Since then, we’ve been greeted exuberantly every single day. Amadou showers us with countless kisses and shows, in his very special way, just how grateful he is for every bit of attention he receives. Yet shortly after, we noticed something wasn’t right. Amadou was having great difficulty urinating. An ultrasound examination revealed the cause: an unusually large, star-shaped bladder stone. Fortunately, the surgery went smoothly, and at the same time, Amadou could also be neutered. Today, he’s back to full health and ready for the next step—the journey to his own forever home. Amadou is an utterly lovable dog. At first, he approaches unfamiliar situations cautiously and observantly. But once he’s gained trust, he reveals his cheerful, exuberant side. Then he leaps, plays, and darts across the finca with pure zest for life, running almost as fast as the wind. It’s wonderful to see how much joy for life he carries within him. Amadou is simply a dream dog when it comes to people too—gentle, friendly, and incredibly cuddly. All that’s missing now is one thing: a family who can show him just how wonderful a real home can be. His new people should bring patience, empathy, and ideally experience with Podencos. A home in a rural setting or on the outskirts of town would be perfect. Exciting walks on a leash, visits to secure off-leash areas, and a securely fenced garden would make Amadou truly happy. He’d also be thrilled to have a friendly canine companion by his side. Amadou carries a microchip and will travel to his new home fully vaccinated, dewormed, neutered, and treated against parasites. Who will finally give this wonderful, sensitive male dog the family he’s waited for so long and so patiently?

About Amadou

What life with Amadou looks like

Amadou is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierhilfe Fuerteventura in Dransfeld.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Amadou, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Amadou?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhilfe Fuerteventura handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Amadou on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Amadou if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhilfe Fuerteventura will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Amadou already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Amadou isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhilfe Fuerteventura early rather than rehoming privately; they know Amadou and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
