Adopt Amaretto

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

tolerant, wary of strangers, insecure Amaretto, who is now named Juri in his foster home, has lived there since August 9, 2025, and shows himself as a sensitive, friendly dog who builds trust with his people step by step. He seeks closeness but needs a lot of space and a pace that he can determine for himself. Too much attention or physical contact upsets him, so it's important not to pressure him and to keep expectations low. Unknown people, especially men, upset him, and he reacts loudly by retreating. In such situations, a clear structure, distance, and calmness help him. For certain situations, Juri wears a positively built muzzle (e.g., vet visit, safety harness). He accepts this calmly. Juri currently lives with several dogs, a cat, and two ponies. With dogs, he shows friendliness and social behavior, sometimes butting heads over distance signals. He has never shown aggressive behavior. The cat living in the household has been accepted, but he displays a pronounced hunting behavior towards unfamiliar cats and wild animals. Towards the ponies, he shows curious but cautious behavior at a distance. Outdoors, Juri moves increasingly confidently, but overall, he is still insecure, especially about unfamiliar external stimuli and new paths. Here, he shows flight and panic behavior, especially with loud, hectic, or large stimuli like tractors, children, bicycles, etc. Training for leash handling is ongoing. Juri is nearly house-trained, knows boxes and uses them as a retreat place. He can perform basic commands like sit and stay almost reliably, with "stay" currently being practiced. He responds well to his name at close range without external stimuli, but the recall is not yet working. Juri's biggest challenge is being alone. Even with just a few minutes with a dog buddy, he shows strong separation anxiety, escapes from cage-like structures, cries, and destroys the setup. Training in this area is targeted, but it requires a lot of intensive and patient training time. Juri needs calm, clear structures and bonds quietly when not pressured. He never reacts aggressively but may snap if his retreat is not enough. This snapping is particularly noticeable in close situations like putting on the safety harness. Training in this area is also ongoing. For Juri, we are looking for: - a quiet, rural home without children - dog-experienced, patient people - someone who respects distance - ideally a confident single dog as a point of reference - people who understand the themes of proximity and being alone Juri is a dog that blossoms with patience and calmness, opens up honestly, and gives a special bond. For people who enjoy small progress and sensitive characters, he will surely become a faithful, grateful companion in the future. This animal has a history of biting. This dog has a prey drive.

About Amaretto

What life with Amaretto looks like

Amaretto is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt in Essen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Amaretto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Amaretto?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Amaretto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Amaretto if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Amaretto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Amaretto isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Amaretto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
