Adopt Animali domestici. Veterinari apprezzati ma cari

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Puppy · 12 months

A recent sample survey by Altroconsumo has shown that many Italians have one or more pets: over half (56%) of respondents own a cat, 62% a dog, 10% fish, 8% turtles, and only 3% own rabbits. The quality of life of these people—particularly the elderly or children—has improved thanks to the bond between humans and animals: as much as 80% of the children interviewed felt better, calmer, and more at ease with a cat at home, a percentage that reaches 70% when a dog is present. The percentage is also very high among the elderly, who declared an improvement in their quality of life both with a dog (67%) and a cat (77%). The survey also addressed the issue of expenses: on average, around 1,562 € is spent per year on a dog and around 1,208 € on a cat, respectively 341 and 194 € for medical expenses. The cost of food remains the highest: on average 880 € for dogs and 779 € for cats, while the cost for hygiene products is 216 € for cats and 208 € for dogs. Nearly half of those surveyed, 49%, have taken out insurance for their dog, but only a few included reimbursement for veterinary costs. And now comes the negative point of Altroconsumo's survey. 81% of respondents declare themselves very satisfied with their veterinarian, considering them competent and able to communicate effectively with both them and the animal, but the fees are less appreciated, and only seven out of ten express satisfaction with the service cost. Veterinary visits are very frequent among pet owners: indeed, the survey shows that in the last 12 months, 88% of dogs had been brought for an annual check-up and 82% for vaccinations. For cats, the percentages are slightly lower: 73% had a check-up and 52% had vaccinations. According to data from Assalco-Zoomark 2022, there are currently 27,200 professionally active veterinarians throughout Italy, of which 70% practice free profession in the companion animal sector (a total of 8,600 authorized veterinary facilities, 74% of which are simple clinics). Eight out of ten veterinary facilities are small in size, and the number of clinics and hospitals is minimal: according to an investigation published by ANMVI at the end of 2021, the clinic (which still represents 74% of the veterinary facilities) has an average turnover of 103,000 euros per year, while the clinic has 245,000 euros per year. In the last two to three years, professional activity has significantly increased, mainly due to a growing demand for services...a demand that, at the top of the list, includes night and holiday availability, which many veterinarians in various areas of the country (including Belluno) refuse to provide.
