Annika

Kangal · Female · Senior · 13 years

Annika, born in 2013, is an impressive Kangal lady in her prime senior years – sovereign, clear in her communication, and with a big heart for "her" people. She spent many years at the animal shelter, mastering her daily life together with her long-time partner Tommy (†). But Annika has shown once again that she wants more than just shelter life: She was able to spend a few days with interested parties – and impressively demonstrated how much she enjoys being close to humans and feels comfortable in a home environment. She loves being part of a small community, calms down well in the house, and remains pleasantly composed. She also handles car rides effortlessly – ideal conditions for a relaxed everyday life. True to her Kangal nature, yet uniquely individual, Annika embodies the classic traits of a livestock guardian dog: watchful, independent, and naturally sovereign. At the same time, she is absolutely friendly and approachable towards people. On walks, she is a pleasant companion who takes many environmental stimuli in stride. Particularly noteworthy: Annika is socially very compatible and is regularly used as a "reliable constant" in dog groups. She gets along very well with other dogs but sets clear boundaries, especially when younger, more boisterous fellow animals become too intrusive. Health & Special Features: Due to her age, Annika receives supportive Vitamin B and pain medication, which she handles well. She occasionally suffers from ear infections and clearly shows that she finds treatments unpleasant. However, with a grain-free diet, this can be managed very well, so problems occur only rarely. What Annika Wishes For: Annika is looking for people who appreciate her calm, clear nature and can provide her with a secure environment.

About Annika

What life with Annika looks like

Annika is a large senior kangal dog waiting at Tierheim Ludwigshafen in Ludwigshafen/Rheim.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Annika, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Annika?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Ludwigshafen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Annika on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Annika if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Ludwigshafen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Annika already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Annika isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Ludwigshafen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Annika and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
