Adopt APOLLO

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Estimated birthdate: August 2021 Brief info: still a bit uncertain, but friendly, rather calm, also curious, male dogs+, female dogs+ Christine & Thomas D. In early August 2025, local law enforcement contacted shelter manager Kata and announced they would bring two dogs they had seized. The unusual duo, the large APOLLO and Dachshund Fips, had a owner, but was still constantly on the streets and barked at passersby from time to time. Since the owner was not cooperative and the dogs were neither vaccinated nor microchipped, the law enforcement took the two dogs and brought them to the animal shelter. Initially, both dogs were suspicious and fearful. While Fips quickly gained trust and allowed itself to be stroked after just a few days, the one born in August 2021, APOLLO, took a bit longer and hid in his doghouse out of insecurity. But after some time, he realized that no one meant him any harm and so he gradually opened up to the new people around him. Now, he runs nicely on a leash with the caretakers and even starts to enjoy cuddles. APOLLO is a rather calm and now also friendly dogman who even shows signs of joy and curiosity. In his interactions with his fellow animals, he is friendly and not so interested, but has only been tested on the leash, thus under control. With Fips, however, there were obviously no problems at all :-). In case of a request for the dear Adam, of course, further tests can be conducted. For APOLLO, we are now looking for calm people with solid dog experience who want to finally show the handsome dogman what it means to be loved and to lead an appropriate dog life. Since he has probably not received any training so far, he of course also has to learn the entire dog 1×1. Due to his suspected mixed breed, APOLLO unfortunately cannot be rehomed to Germany but only to certain cantons of Switzerland (or to other countries without restrictions, like Hungary). APOLLO moves to a new home neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and with an EU pet passport. Would you like to learn more about the lovely dogman? Then we look forward to your message!

About APOLLO

What life with APOLLO looks like

APOLLO is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Pfotenretter Ungarn in Pfotenretter.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting APOLLO, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about APOLLO?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Pfotenretter Ungarn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw APOLLO on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt APOLLO if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Pfotenretter Ungarn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is APOLLO already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if APOLLO isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Pfotenretter Ungarn early rather than rehoming privately; they know APOLLO and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
