Adopt ARLO

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

Estimated birthdate: February 2020 Brief info: very energetic, cuddly, but unfortunately unpredictable, as he is still unsure and mistrustful, would need an extremely dog-experienced home Claudia M. & Kirsten S. Vreni F. & Kirsten S. The estimated February 2020-born ARLO has already had a very tough time despite his young age. He survived by a chain next to an alcoholic. This man repeatedly vented his frustration on the helpless ARLO until a kind neighbor finally reacted, and the poor fellow was freed from his miserable situation by the veterinary office in October 2021. No wonder that ARLO was initially very unsettled and mistrustful. However, at the shelter and in the run, ARLO became quite approachable to his caretakers rather quickly. But in stressful situations – especially on the leash outside the station – the handsome hound was tense and “defended” himself repeatedly through snapping and barking. But after a few months, Arlo’s caretaker Laci managed to take ARLO for walks in a very relaxed manner. And when we met him in September 2022, he was also friendly towards us strangers. Although he was still a bit tense on the leash outside, he still walked well. Given his background, we were of course very careful in handling him, but he showed no signs of snapping. And he loves treats! With his caretaker Laci, ARLO now snuggles joyfully and relaxed. And when he is let out of the run into the run, he is overjoyed, runs wild for a while, and has to tell everyone that HE is now here :-). Unfortunately, ARLO still shows two faces. He is usually friendly and relaxed, but will occasionally fall back into his old pattern, snaps around, even bites, and can then be dangerous. This also happens to people he actually knows. Due to this unpredictability, we have him listed as not suitable for an active home. The compatibility with other animals with his fellow animals is inconsistent and changeable. ARLO would be neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and travel to his new home with an EU pet passport. If you think you can provide ARLO with a suitable home, we look forward to your message!

About ARLO

What life with ARLO looks like

ARLO is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Pfotenretter Ungarn in Pfotenretter.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting ARLO, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about ARLO?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Pfotenretter Ungarn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw ARLO on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt ARLO if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Pfotenretter Ungarn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is ARLO already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if ARLO isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Pfotenretter Ungarn early rather than rehoming privately; they know ARLO and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
