Apolo

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 3 months

Apolo is currently 10 weeks old (as of mid-December 2022) and was probably an unwanted leftover from a litter – how else could it be explained that the beautiful puppy was abandoned near the animal shelter of our friends in Seville, in front of a locked gate, very close to a busy road. It is currently cold and wet in Spain, and even though Apolo will surely laugh at the cold in a year and his already wonderful coat will protect him from both cold and heat, he doesn't have undercoat yet, and if he hadn't frozen, he would probably have been hit by a car or caught by the dog catchers. Fortunately, none of this happened, because a man found the bundle of fear and informed our partners at Arca. Now, the playful and extremely lively cuddle bear lives in a loving foster home, continues to grow happily and awaits what's to come. Apolo is a treasure who already at just under three months shows a huge herding dog heart. Cuddling and being loved are his specialties and his extremely unusual appearance naturally helps him make friends incredibly quickly. Apolo will one day become a big, impressive male dog and we wish for him a home that is aware of the responsibility of giving a companion like him a home. Herd dogs have a very special, wonderful character, but they also need targeted training and guidance. Attending a breed-experienced dog training class is especially recommended for two-leggers who don't have any herding dog knowledge yet (although this is a sensible thing for all puppies!). A "gentle giant," as we like to call our herding dogs, is the best friend you can wish for, unconditionally loyal and usually an incredible cuddly bear, but also equipped with a head of iron. These amazing four-legged beings are real counterparts, they cannot be trained, but want to understand and recognize rules and structures. You will hardly find one of these teddies on the agility course, because a herding dog won't jump over an obstacle when he can go around it. An adult herding dog will go through fire for you, but expects the same devotion from you. A garden, preferably with the possibility that the dog can decide for himself when he prefers to be outside, is not absolutely necessary, but is certainly a big advantage. Even though the herding dog makes a perfect cuddle pillow and an XXL hot water bottle, he wants to fulfill his purpose in guarding and protection. If you are looking for a confident companion who would never leave your side in the biggest crisis, who acts calmly and confidently with you as a team, then you will have a lot of joy with one of our golden-hearted giants – and thus also with Apolo!

DE·Show original

About Apolo

What life with Apolo looks like

Apolo is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Apolo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Apolo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Apolo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Apolo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Apolo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Apolo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Apolo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
