April

Female · Puppy

Two smaller Maremmanomix-female dogs, which had run into a shepherd in a small village near Sassari and gave birth almost simultaneously to their puppies: 4 boys and 5 girls. The shepherd did not want the puppies, and one of our helpers' acquaintances convinced the shepherd to not kill the puppies but to seek help instead. He wanted to keep one of the mothers but wanted to get rid of the second mother and her puppies. Under the condition that he would allow the remaining female dog to be neutered, we offered him help. (By the way, the castration of the female dog has already taken place.) So, one of the mothers and all nine puppies came to Paola and Pierpaolo in Stintino for rescue. The mother had to care for a large litter, and although she was sometimes a bit overwhelmed, the little ones—Aida, Anna, Appia, Asia, Aurelia, and the boys Angelo, Arno, and Augusto—grew into beautiful and very lively and friendly puppies. They have already traveled to Germany. Only Achille, the brother, is still with Paola because he was ill and needs to recover. During our project tour in mid-March 2026, we also got to know Mama April. She is a very lovely, friendly Maremmanomix-female dog that we immediately fell in love with. She is noticeably smaller than we are used to with Maremmanomix-female dogs, but she is no less beautiful. We now also wish for April that she will soon leave the rescue and embark on her journey to Germany. As a Maremmanomix, she needs a suitable home environment. Experience with this wonderful breed would be advantageous. At the very least, the willingness to familiarize oneself with the breed characteristics and to implement recommendations should be present. Would you like to enrich your family with this lovely female dog? April was allowed to travel to her German foster home in April. If you are currently looking for a new furry family member and are aware that adoption brings not only great joy but also a lot of work and great responsibility, we look forward to your message.

About April

What life with April looks like

April is a large puppy/kitten dog waiting at ProTier e.V. in Germany.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting April, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about April?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ProTier e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw April on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt April if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ProTier e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is April already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if April isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ProTier e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know April and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
