Adopt Argo

Male · Young · 2 years

Shelter Argo was a puppy, not even a year old. He was brought by a nervous young man - the dog belonged to a friend who had ended up in jail. He had promised to take care of the animal for a while, but couldn't handle it and didn't have anything to feed him. The man didn't hide his fear of his friend's reaction when he got out of jail and found out about the dog being given to the shelter, but he saw no other option. About a year passed before the supposed owner contacted the shelter: he was coming to pick up the dog and told them not to try to keep him. We asked how he planned to handle Argo if there were small children at home, but the dog had grown and matured, and his attitude towards the world often showed through aggression. When we received a refusal, we heard curses and threats. We expected the shelter to come and ask for Argo back, but no one came and they stopped contacting us by phone. As time went on, we realized that in the stressful environment of the shelter, we couldn't suppress Argo's aggression on our own. This drastically limited the potential adopters, who already had an obligation - the dog would have to be trained. Seeing Argo's expressions, all interested parties "backed off". So we turned to a dog trainer from "Elevate K9" asking for help to get Argo in order outside the shelter. Many donors responded to our call, providing the dog with the opportunity to live and learn with a professional using their own funds. If we hadn't provided this opportunity for Argo, his life would most likely have been spent in the shelter - many more years where the dog's world would be limited to a caged run, a walking area, and two brave volunteers. However, now, as the training with the dog trainer is nearing completion, we can confidently say: Argo can start looking for his real home. Here is what the instructors from "Elevate K9" have to say about him: "Argo is full of great qualities. He loves people and is polite when communicating with children. He likes to play and learn. He is curious and enjoys meeting new things. His play with other dogs is a pleasure to watch - he is very polite and can easily read his playmate. Argo is a true joy of life dog. He has learned the basics: sit, stay, come, no, beside. He also understands everyday communication: come here, let's go there. Argo is ready to meet his new owners! Come visit and get to know him! Argo will be an excellent fit for a house. A family with children is also okay - Argo has no problem with that! He can also live with another dog, but the important condition is that it is a female dog. Everything else we can still say... he is just a really nice dog!" We'll add that, if adopting Argo, further training at "Elevate K9" dog school will be mandatory, but for free for the new owners!

About Argo

What life with Argo looks like

Argo is a young adult dog waiting at Labās Mājas in Riga.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇱🇻Adopting from Latvia

The shelter typically completes the animal's vaccinations, microchipping, and pet passport before adoption. Specific fees and process details vary by shelter and country — confirm directly via the contact details in the sidebar.

Frequently asked

Adopting Argo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Argo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Labās Mājas handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Argo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Argo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Labās Mājas will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Argo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Argo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Labās Mājas early rather than rehoming privately; they know Argo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (LV). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
