Artus

Great Dane · Male · Adult · 8 years

Weight: 51 kg, withers height: 81 cm Dogge Artus came to us because he became too strong for his former owner. She could no longer walk him safely, as he often shows leash aggression towards other animals. Because of this, Artus did not leave his own premises for a long time. Artus is alert with us, but basically very friendly towards people. He usually does not take long to make friends with people. Then he can be lovingly enthusiastic, but he can be easily redirected from jumping on someone. Nevertheless, people who have to deal with Artus should be able to match his physical strength, so they do not end up flying all the way to the moon with a friendly push. ;) For small children, Artus is therefore not suitable - at least in his current under-stimulated state. Artus seeks the company of his human and is a big cuddler. In a new home, it would be best to already have dog experience, Artus should be physically mature and willing to work on dog encounters with Artus. Artus is not suitable as a first dog. During walks, Artus walks well on the leash, as long as no other dog triggers him. If an approaching dog behaves calmly and reservedly, passing by can already go peacefully. However, if the other dog provokes (fixates, barks), Artus rushes headlessly towards the troublemaker. People who behave noticeably while walking are kept under observation by Artus, but apart from this vigilance, he has not shown any particular issues in this regard so far. Due to his leash aggression and physical strength, we have trained Artus to wear a muzzle, which secures him outside the shelter. In general, Artus is conditionally compatible with other animals without a leash - if the introduction is done slowly and positively and both parties like each other. Artus previously lived with a female dog. However, there were also conflicts when jealousy or resources were involved. However, we cannot judge who started the conflict in these situations. There were also male playmates for Artus in the past, with whom Artus got along well. In short, we would individually assess the compatibility with others for Artus if there is already a dog in the new home. However, this dog should not be too small or fragile in case of emergencies.

About Artus

What life with Artus looks like

Artus is a small adult great dane dog waiting at Tierheim Elmshorn in Elmshorn.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Artus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Artus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Elmshorn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Artus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Artus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Elmshorn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Artus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Artus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Elmshorn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Artus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
