Adopt Atena

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 4 years

As with every project tour, a visit to the LIDA shelter was planned at the beginning of January 2026. Marco had already warned us that again, several dog moms with their puppies would be waiting for us. After we had photographed Mama Nana and her little ones, we then went to the area marked as "Masel-boxes." There, Mama Atena was waiting with her children Rafano, Rafiki, Raja, Ramen, Raven, Rojo, and Rox. Atena was discovered with her puppies in the countryside and brought to the shelter. She actually had nine babies, but two have already found their homes. We started our photo session with Mama Atena, who was somewhat cautious in the first minutes. We were strangers, and she needed to check if she could trust us. I sat down on a concrete block that is in the small outdoor area ... and there she was, after two minutes, placing her front paws on my thighs, looking me in the eyes, and then sitting on my lap, enjoying being petted. Afterwards, she willingly allowed herself to be photographed (and also was petted by Wolfgang). Unfortunately, it started to rain again, and we had to go under the covered area. Unfortunately, the puppies of Atena were completely wet now, plus the light under the roof was very diffused, constantly switching between dark and a bit brighter, and occasionally some sun rays came in when the rain stopped for a few seconds. All of this affected the photos, especially the representation of the coat colors. Rajah and Rox, the two girls, as well as the brothers Rafano, Rafiki, Ramen, Raven, and Rojo have all become very nice puppy. They were somewhat reserved, the photo session was not entirely comfortable for them, but they were all very kind and affectionate. Later, back in their safe box, they played joyfully together. Since we care a lot about the little ones being able to develop as best as possible, we want to bring them to Germany as soon as the legal regulations allow. There, they will find their people and their dream home with a close family connection. Of course, we also want to find a permanent home for the beloved Mama Atena. February 28, 2026: Atena traveled to her German foster home. If you are currently looking for a new furry family member, and you are aware that adoption means not only a lot of joy, but also work and great responsibility, then we look forward to hearing from you. We place puppies throughout Germany.

About Atena

What life with Atena looks like

Atena is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at ProTier e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Atena, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Atena?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ProTier e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Atena on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Atena if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ProTier e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Atena already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Atena isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ProTier e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Atena and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
